Bluejays hold Musketeers to .061 hitting
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 15 Creighton Volleyball team assured itself a chance to play for its 10th straight BIG EAST regular-season title on Sunday with a 3-0 sweep of Xavier on Friday. The 25-8, 25-18, 25-20 sweep avenged a five-set loss to the Musketeers in Cincinnati on Sept. 23rd, the first time in 23 meetings that Xavier had beaten the Bluejays.
Norah Sis had 13 kills, nine digs and two aces while Ava Martin owned 12 kills and seven digs while hitting .478. Creighton hit .340 in the victory and added 46 kills, five aces, 44 digs and three blocks. Cincinnati native Sydney Breissinger paced the Bluejays with 10 digs, Kiana Schmitt hit .583 in 12 swings and Kendra Wait recorded a match-best 38 assists.
Emma Grace led the Musketeers with 11 kills while Logan Flaugh upped 11 digs. Xavier (18-11, 11-7 BIG EAST) hit .061 and finished with 26 kills, two aces, 39 digs and four blocks.
Creighton (24-4, 15-2 BIG EAST) dominated from the start, hitting .542 in the first set while holding the Musketeers to .000 hitting. Xavier scored the first point of the match before Creighton embarked on an 11-1 run with Kiara Reinhardt and Sky McCune serving. The lead stretched to 16-4 and ended on the sixth kill of the set from Sis, which matched the Xavier total.
Martin served Creighton to a 4-0 lead in the second set as Creighton never trailed in a 25-18 win. Three straight kills by Martin pushed Creighton's lead to 12-3 and Sis' second ace of the set moved the advantage to 14-3. Creighton led by as much as 19-8 before Xavier gained any traction, but a kill from Abbey Milner finished off the second set. Martin had five kills in the second set.
The third set was easily the closest of the night. The teams were deadlocked at 5-5 before a 5-0 run on Breissinger's serve that included back-to-back blocks from Reinhardt, and CU would not trail again. An 8-2 Bluejay surge saw Creighton move ahead 19-12. Xavier drew within three late at 23-20 before kills from Reinhardt and Sis finished off CU's seventh sweep in as many BIG EAST matches this fall. Sis, Martin and Schmitt all had five kills in the third set as Wait dished 16 assists.
Creighton hosts Butler on Sunday at 1 p.m. and will honor seniors Ellie Bichelmeyer and Kiana Schmitt after the match. Bichelmeyer combined for 12 kills in 19 errorless swings on Friday.
