#17 Volleyball Claims BIG EAST Tournament Crown with Sweep of St. John's

Bluejays have won 9 of 10 appearance in BIG EAST Tournament title match
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- No. 17 Creighton Volleyball claimed its ninth BIG EAST Tournament title in the last 10 years with a dominant 3-0 sweep of St. John's on Saturday, November 25. Set scores for the match were 25-13, 25-9, 25-23
In their 10 appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament title match, the Bluejays moved to 9-1 including nine straight wins. Creighton swept the season series with the Red Storm, taking the match at home 3-0 (Sept. 29), 3-1 on the road (Nov. 11) and 3-0 this afternoon on a nuetral floor in Milwaukee.
With their 15th straight win the Bluejays pushed their record to 27-4 on the season, while St. John's fell to 23-10
The Bluejays hit the court ready as Creighton opened the match with an 11-2 run to force St. John's to use both timeouts. During those first 13 points Creighton got five combined kills from Kiana Schmitt (3) and Norah Sis (2) with a team hitting percentage of .545. While the Red Storm gathered themselves, the Bluejays took the set with relative ease at 25-13. Sis terminated one to close the opening stanza with five kills as CU hit .400 as a team, limiting St. John's to .000.
Creighton raised their level of play another level in the second set, storming out to a 15-3 edge. Schmitt led the charge with five kills in the set, but another weapon the Bluejays unleashed was their serving prowess. Creighton delivered five services aces and five blocks in the set and hit .588 in the set to take the frame 25-9.
Locked in a battle in the third set, Creighton held a 16-15 lead. The Bluejays created some separation with a 4-1 run to surge ahead 20-16, but St. John's responded with three consecutive points to force Creighton to use its first timeout of the match. Holding a 21-20 edge moments later the Bluejays forced consecutive attack errors by the Red Storm to claim a 23-20 lead. Creighton's final two points came on kills from Schmitt and Ava Martin slamming one down match point.
Schmitt led all attackers with 12 kills in the match, while Sydney Breissinger had a dozen digs and Sky McCune delivered 11 of her own. Creighton hit .355 in the contest, finishing with 43 kills, six aces, 41 digs and 13 blocks.
Lucrezia Lodi and Erin Jones led the Red Storm with seven kills each. The Johnnies had 24 kills, one ace, 31 digs and three blocks and hit .021 overall.
Following the match the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team was announced, led by three Creighton players. Schmitt earned MVP honors with 18 kills over two matches. In Saturday's championship final she not only had 12 kills, but hit .526. Joining her on the All-Tournament team were Martin and setting Kendra Wait. Martin led Creighton with 19 kills combined in the two matches, while Wait dished out 61 assists and also had eight combined kills.
The Bluejays will return to Omaha this evening and prepare to watch the NCAA Tournament selection show to see if the Bluejays will host three other teams next weekend or travel. Creighton will host a Selection Show viewing party that is open to fans and media at the D.J.'s Dugout downtown location (1003 Capitol Ave.) in Omaha. The selections will be announced beginning at 5 p.m. (CT) on Sunday on ESPN.
