#17 Volleyball Sweeps Colgate; Hosts Minnesota on Saturday

Bluejays and Gophers willl meet for second time this fall
OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 17 Creighton Volleyball team continued its late-season surge with a 3-0 victory over Colgate in the First Round of the 2023 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Scores of CU's 16th straight win were 25-19, 25-23 25-20.
Creighton improved to 28-4 on the year and 12-0 inside D.J. Sokol Arena, where it will host Minnesota (17-12) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with a Sweet 16 berth on the line. Colgate ends its season with a 22-8 mark.
Norah Sis led all players with 12 kills while Ava Martin and Kiana Schmitt each contributed nine kills. Sky McCune had a team-leading 13 digs and served one of CU's five aces. Creighton had 48 kills, 53 digs and six blocks on .319 hitting.
Colgate was paced by Frances Torres, who had 11 kills and hit .526. The Raiders, who earned the automatic bid out of the Patriot League for the third straight year, had 41 kills, five aces, 50 digs and four blocks on .231 hitting.
The Bluejays used a 9-0 run on McCune's serve to bolt to a 10-2 lead early on. Colgate did regain its composure to draw within 16-13 before the Jays pulled away to extend the lead to 20-14. A three-point run closed out CU's 25-19 set one victory, capped by back-to-back kills from Kiara Reinhardt. Reinhardt had four kills in five swings during the opener, while Martin added six digs and three kills.
The second set included 12 ties and six lead changes. The Bluejays seemed in control with a 20-16 lead, but Colgate bounced back to tie the set at 22-all and 23-all. CU won the set on kills from All-BIG EAST performers Kiana Schmitt and Sis. Creighton hit .389 in the second set as five different women had multiple putaways. Colgate hit .294 in the set, getting four kills apiece from Torres and Abby Shadwick.
Creighton clinched its fourth First Round sweep in the past six seasons with a 25-20 victory in the final game. CU built a 17-10 lead and eventually converted its fourth match point opportunity for the 25-20 victory. Sis had six kills and five digs in the final frame and Kendra Wait had 13 assists, four digs, a kill and a block in the finale.
Minnesota won the first match of the day, sweeping Utah State.
