Schmitt & Wait Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball standouts Kiana Schmitt and Kendra Wait have been named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Volleyball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators. It's the second straight year that both women landed on the Academic All-District team.

The teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced Jan. 9, 2024.

Schmitt led the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.379) and ranked second in the league in blocks per set (1.08) in her fifth and final season as a Bluejay. The Waunakee, Wis., native also ranked among the conference leaders in kills per set (2.65) and points per set (3.22). An exercise science for pre-health professions major and biology minor, Schmitt was named Most Valuable Player of the 2023 BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP. Her .379 hitting percentage broke Creighton's single-season school record.

Wait topped Creighton in both assists and digs as she was named BIG EAST Player of the Year and BIG EAST Setter of the Year. The Gardner, Kan., product led the BIG EAST in assists per set (10.35) for the third straight season, also ranking 10th in digs per set (3.41) and 18th in blocks per set (0.78). Wait's setting helped Creighton establish a program record for hitting percentage (.283). Wait is a Nursing major who last year was named Second Team Academic All-American by College Sports Communicators.

Academic standing and eligibility:

Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
Student-athletes must be enrolled at their institution at the time of nomination either as undergraduates or graduate students. Only the school at which an athlete competed in the current academic year can nominate that player.
Student-athletes who have graduated from their own institution during the current academic year and are not competing in athletics at another institution at the time of nomination are eligible.
An undergraduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
A graduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as both an undergraduate and a grad student unless they are in their first semester as a graduate student and don't have an established graduate GPA.
The cumulative grade point average may not be rounded up to 3.50.

NEW: Athletic eligibility

Fall sports (Volleyball), student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's sets played OR must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's total matches.
