OMAHA, Neb. -- Rice University pin hitter Ellie Bichelmeyer, a two-time All-Conference USA selection, has announced she will transfer to Creighton for her fifth year of collegiate volleyball. The Mission Hills, Kan., native is the daughter of former Creighton Baseball player John Bichelmeyer (1993-97), while her mom Julie (Neary) Bichelmeyer also graduated from Creighton.
"We are thrilled to add Ellie to an already talented 2023 class," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "Ellie brings a wealth of experience from a top 20 program. She is a versatile player who is able to play either outside or right side. Most importantly, she's an amazing person and teammate who will add to the Creighton culture."
Bichelmeyer was named Second Team All-Conference USA in both 2020 and 2022 and owned 833 career kills and 184 blocks on .261 hitting in 105 matches at Rice. The Owls went 90-20 in her four years, including a 50-2 mark in conference matches. Rice qualified for the NCAA Tournament all four seasons she was part of the program, advancing to the Second Round in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
Last fall Bichelmeyer helped Rice upset then-No. 21 Creighton when she had 12 kills, two blocks and two digs on Sept. 18 in the Owls' 3-2 win over the Bluejays. That was one of 15 matches that Bichelmeyer had 10 or more kills last fall, including a career-high 21 vs. Charlotte on Oct. 16.
The 6--foot-2 Bichelmeyer was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Team in 2021 as well as landing on C-USA's All-Freshman Team in 2019. She is also a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. As a prep at St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City, she helped her team to four state tournament appearances, was a two-time All-State pick, and set school records for both kills and blocks.
Creighton earned an 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament last fall and finished the 2022 season with a 27-5 record. The Bluejays won their ninth straight regular-season BIG EAST title while also capturing the BIG EAST Tournament title for the eighth time in the past nine seasons.
