ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 65 ranked Creighton men's tennis team collected its third consecutive victory in Florida with a sweep of IUPUI on Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Bluejays ended their trip to Florida with a perfect 3-0 record and improved to 9-3 on the season with their ninth straight victory. The Jaguars fell to 4-12 this spring with the loss.
Creighton opened the day with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position as the Bluejays secured the doubles point for the sixth straight match.
Oscar Alvarez and Zachary Kuo won 6-2 at the No. 3 doubles position, while Alejandro Gandini and Kirtan Patel clinched the first point with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The Bluejays dropped just one set in singles play at the top spot but continued to cruise to a 7-0 sweep of the Jaguars.
Alvarez and Shin Inoue quickly pushed the Bluejays advantage out to 3-0 with wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 slots. Alvarez claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot, while Inoue picked up a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 slot.
Graduate Casey Ross clinched the overall dual for Creighton with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 2 singles position. Patel continued the Bluejays winning ways with a 7-5 victory at the No. 6 spot, while Gandini captured a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win at the No. 3 singles spot.
Junior Matthew Lanahan dropped his first set 6-3 to IUPUI's Alex Jochium but responded with a 7-6 (7-4) victory in set two to force a decisive third set. In the third set, Lanahan surged out to an early lead before claiming the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-2.
"It's great to see our guys pull together and play with confidence," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We handled a few slow starts in doubles and singles but finished strong on every court."
The Bluejays will have two weeks off before returning to action on Friday, March 24 against former Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State. First serve with the Redbirds is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. from the Hanscom Tennis Center.
