McGuire Becomes Creighton's Second Athlete Nominated for an ESPY
Omaha, Neb. -- During the summer of 2022, Creighton men's soccer junior Duncan McGuire began a journey that would exceed the dreams of himself, his coaches, teammates and soccer players throughout the country.
Another cherry was added this week as McGuire was nominated for the 2023 ESPY for Best College Athlete in Men's Sports. McGuire is just the second Creighton athlete in school history to be nominated for an ESPY, joining Doug McDermott who won the Best College Athlete in Men's Sports award in 2014. The 2023 ESPY Awards will be announced during the Award celebration on ESPN on July 12, beginning at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
Since August of 2022, McGuire guided the Bluejays to Creighton's sixth College Cup appearance, first since 2012. He led the NCAA in points (50) and goals (23), setting the Creighton single-season record in goals, was a two-time National Player of the week. Earned the MAC Hermann Award (College Soccer's Top Honor) and earned United Soccer Coaches All-America honors. In the 2022 MLS Super Draft, McGuire was selected sixth overall to Orlando City.
"It's weird to think, at some point last season Johnny (Torres), Ian (Sarachan) and the rest of the staff started talking about me getting drafted," said McGuire. "After the BIG EAST Tournament they felt being drafted was 100% certainty."
"Twelve months ago I was thinking about what job I might have after graduating or being drafted in the USL," said McGuire. "Looking back on it its hard to believe how the last year transpired."
"Duncan in my mind has always been a young man that has worked harder than anyone on the field," noted Torres. "I always knew there was potential, but I hadn't envisioned it to this extent."
The awards and accolades didn't stop McGuire's work ethic, rather it fueled him. After initially coming off the bench with Orlando City, Duncan leads the team with six goals and has moved into the starting lineup.
"Duncan's passion and desire to do anything to help his team be successful is unrivaled," continued Torres. "
McGuire's focus remains laser trained as the Omaha native has just one thing in mind, "the next thing is to keep contributing to the team, continue scoring goals and hopefully lead Orlando City to a trophy."
