Volleyball Moves To Season-Best 14th in AVCA Poll
9/11/2023 1:55:00 PM | Volleyball
Bluejays have won back-to-back-to-back tournaments, have one non-conference weekend left.
Creighton went 2-1 last week to improve to 7-2 overall. The Bluejays became the only team to win a set against No. 4 Nebraska this season on Wednesday, then swept Omaha on Friday in front of the fourth-largest Baxter Arena volleyball crowd in history. Creighton won the MN Hospitality Omaha Challenge on Sunday with a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Iowa State. Despite its loss to Creighton, the Cyclones moved into the Top 25 for the first time this fall in the No. 23 spot and along with current No. 17 Purdue one of two current Top 25 victories for the Jays.
CU's No. 14 ranking this week matches its highest ranking in the month of September since also being No. 14 in the final two polls in September of 2019.
The Bluejays are one of 17 schools (along with Baylor, BYU, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Stanford, Texas and Wisconsin) to have been ranked each of the last 34 polls. Creighton has been ranked in all but six of the past 103 weeks the AVCA has put out a Top 25 poll and 111 times in program history, which is 42nd-most all-time. Creighton is 179-42 all-time when playing as a ranked team in the AVCA poll.
CU's all-time best ranking in program history is No. 7, which came in the poll released on Aug. 28, 2017. This is the 12th straight season that Creighton has spent at least one week in the top-25, extending another program record.
Creighton's BIG EAST rival, Marquette, which started the season ranked 12th, dropped out of the poll after a second straight 0-2 weekend dropped the Golden Eagles to 2-5 overall.
The top five of the poll features Wisconsin, Louisville, Florida, Nebraska and Stanford.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday at 5 p.m. when it meets defending Big South Conference champion High Point (6-3) in Minneapolis, Minn., to open play in the Diet Coke Classic. The Bluejays then take on No. 9 Minnesota on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on BTN+.
