Women’s Soccer Falls To Marquette, 3-1

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat, falling to Marquette in Morrison Stadium on Thursday, September 28.
The loss dropped Creighton to 2-5-4 overall and 0-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette climbed to 5-5-2 on the season and 2-1-0 in conference action.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute (2:03) as senior Hailey Block delivered the first of her two goals in the match. Block finished a play from the top of the box off a one touche pass from senior Elsi Twombly.
Creighton quickly responded and leveled the match at 1-1 in the 7th minute (6:24) on a strike from 25-yards out by junior Azumi Manriki. The Hiroshima, Japan native found the back of the second time this season off a pass from senior Abigail Santana and graduate Hitomi Yamaue.
Marquette, however, would regain a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute (22:42) on a goal by Josie Bieda as she ricocheted a shot off the right post into the goal for her second score of the season. Twombly was credited with her second assist of the match after playing a through ball to Bieda at the top of the 18-yard box.
Block would then add to the Golden Eagles lead, scoring her second goal of the match in the 33rd minute (32:48) of play. Block recovered a pass from Caroline Cline just inside the 18-yard box before firing a shot past Creighton's goalkeeper, Keelan Terrell, to give Marquette a 3-1 lead.
Creighton would control possession the rest of the match, creating multiple scoring opportunities in the second half but could not find the back of the net.
The Bluejays finished the match with a 17-6 advantage in shots, which included Creighton holding a 9-0 edge in shots in the second half. Creighton also held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks, while Marquette goalkeeper Mikki Easter collected eight saves.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 1 in a road match at Providence. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
