Cincinnati, Ohio -- Thanks to a first half goal from sophomore Ali Ramadan, Crieghton Men's Soccer captured a 1-0 win at Xavier on Saturday, October 12. The goal crossed in the 32nd minute of a defensive battle that saw just four combined shots in the first half and 15 in the entire contest.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 6-4-3 on the season and 1-2-1 in BIG EAST action, while Xavier fell to 4-5-4 overall as well as 1-2-1 in conference play.
Defensive battles are typically filled with physicality and intensity, the battle between the Musketeers and Bluejays did not disappoint. The contest featured 37 fouls (17 for Creighton) and eight yellow cards (three picked up by Creighton's Fabian Alvarez, Blake Gillingham and Roman Torres). Seven of those cards were issued in the final 30 minutes of the contest.
The Bluejays goal saw sophomore Miguel Arilla bring the ball to the center of the pitch just outside the 18-yard box, he deftly found senior Jackson Castro rushing toward the goal who touched a pass to Ramadan for the goal from eight yards out.
Xavier closed the game with a one-shot lead, 8-7 and held a 5-3 edge in corners created.
"We wanted to reward ourselves for the brand of football we've been playing all year," said head coach Johnny Torres. "I'm so proud of our guys. Despite some guys needing to play out of position, we were able to get a result on the road against this tough Xavier team."
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 19 at home as the Bluejays face Villanova at 3:00 p.m. in Morrison Stadium.
