Bluejay Men's Soccer Topples San Francisco 4-2

Omaha, Neb. -- Leading 2-0 at the break, Creighton Men's Soccer battled through a frantic second half to earn a 4-2 victory over San Francisco in the second match of the Jesuit Invitational on Sunday, September 1.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 2-0-2 on the season, while San Francisco fell to 0-2-2.
Creighton built its 2-0 lead in the opening frame as senior Jackson Castro banged home a penalty kick in the 33rd minute (32:35). In the closing seconds of the first half, literally the final second to be precise, the Bluejays pushed in a second goal by scoring on a corner kick. After earning the corner with under 10 seconds left in the half, junior Roman Torres sent the volley into the box where freshman Gavrilo Civric headed the ball into the net at 44:59.
The Bluejays late first half goal seemed to motivate the Dons. San Francisco came evened the match in the opening 10 minutes of the second half with goals in the 48th and 55th minutes. San Francisco's first goal came with 47:57 on the clock as TJ Knight punched in the second shot of a corner kick, with the assist going to Mason Dougherty as his shot was saved by Creighton goalkeeper Blake Gillingham.
San Francisco pulled even at 2-2 with 54:17 showing on the clock by scoring on another set piece. The Dons' Junhwan Park pushed in the equalizer with his right foot, coming off the head of Elias Thomas and started by a corner from Kian Jones.
Just over four minutes later the Bluejays responded by reclaiming the lead on a set piece of their own. Sophomore Miguel Arilla lofted in a corner to the head of senior Mark O'Neill. His shot glanced off the foot of a Dons' defender into the goal.
The final goal of the match came off the foot of Arilla as he blasted in a shot from 22 yards with the assist going to Castro.
A feisty contest saw seven yellow cards issued, four to Creighton and three to San Francisco. The Dons fired 11 shots in the second half, closing the match with a 13-11 shot edge. The Bluejays held a 9-6 edge on corner kicks created.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Friday, September 6 as the Bluejays face Denver in the 12th annual Socctoberfest at 7:45 p.m.
