WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite a strong defensive effort, the Creighton women's soccer team fell to Georgetown, 1-0, in the nation's capital during the BIG EAST opener on Sunday, Sept. 22.
The Bluejays fell to 3-3-1 on the season following the loss and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown improved to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action.
Creighton was the more aggressive team in the opening 10 minutes of the contest, but the Hoyas quickly flipped the script and controlled possession for the majority of the opening half. Although Georgetown outshot the Bluejays 8-2 in the first half, neither team was able to push a ball into the back of the net.
Creighton continued to hold tough defensive throughout the early portions of the second half, before Georgetown found the back of the net in the 74th minute on a strike from Maja Lardner. Lardner slammed home her team-leading fifth goal of the season, firing a bullet past the outstretched reach of Bluejay goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac from the top of the 18-yard box to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
Georgetown ended the contest with a 16-6 edge in shots taken and a 12-5 edge in corner kicks, while Zalac was impressive all match long, securing a career-high eight saves in goal.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 26 when they host Villanova at 6 p.m. inside Morrison Stadium.
