MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Bolstered by a first half goal by freshman Anna Bragg, the Creighton women's soccer team captured its first BIG EAST win of the 2024 season with a 1-0 shutout victory over Marquette on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Milwaukee, Wis.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-2-0 BIG EAST play as Creighton posted its fourth consecutive result over Marquette in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles fell to 3-7-2 overall and 0-2-0 in league action with the loss.
Bragg broke through for the Bluejays in the 31st minute as she touched the back of the net for the first time in her Bluejay career. Earning her first collegiate start, Bragg received a pass from sophomore Mallory Connealy just outside the top of the 18-yards box, where she one-touched a shot into the top right corner of the goal to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
Creighton's defensive unit was extremely impressive in the opening 45 minutes, limiting Marquette to just one total shot. In total the Bluejays out shot the Golden Eagles, 8-1, in the first half and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks created.
The script flipped in the second half as Marquette was the far more aggressive team, outshooting Creighton, 7-0, in the second half. In addition, the Golden Eagles created five corners in the second frame.
Although Marquette was putting an emphasis on its offense, the Bluejays defense stepped up denying a plethora of shots in the final minutes of the match to preserve their fourth shutout of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac notched her four clean sheet of the season and the first BIG EAST win of her career while recording just one save.
Both teams recorded eight shots in the match, while Marquette held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks created.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 3 when they battle #21 Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio at 6 p.m.
