Zalac Shines in Scoreless Socctoberfest Battle With #19 Saint Louis

OMAHA, Neb. – Playing in front of a record setting crowd of 3,670, the Creighton Women's Soccer team posted its first result over a Top-25 non-conference opponent since 1994, batting No. 19 Saint Louis to a scoreless draw in the Bluejays 10th annual Socctoberfest match on Friday, Sept. 6
Following Friday's action Creighton is 2-2-1 on the season, while the Billikens moved to 2-1-3 overall with the draw. Creighton also moved to 6-1-3 in Socctoberfest matches at Morrison Stadium.
Although Saint Louis held possession throughout the early portions of the first 20 minutes and held a 5-1 edge in shots at the break, it was Creighton's backline and junior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac that battled the consistent Billiken pressure to keep the match scoreless.
Saint Louis continued to pressure the Bluejays early on in the second half, challenging Zalac on multiple scoring opportunities. The Billikens had two dangerous chances in the 58th minute of play as Emily Gaebe and Hannah Larson fired shots on goal but denied with incredible saves by Zalac.
The Bluejays countered late in the match, taking control of the pace of play and delivering dangerous scoring opportunities of their own. Senior Azumi Manriki nearly gave Creighton a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute, lasering a shot off the crossbar from 25-yards out.
Down to the final five minutes of play, Creighton had one final push in them. After earning a free kick just outside the box, Manriki fired a shot on goal but was denied by Saint Louis goalkeeper Emily Puricelli.
Saint Louis closed the match with a 11-8 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corners, but Zalac collected five total saves to record her second clean sheet of the season.
Creighton will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 15 when they close out non-conference play against Kansas City. The Bluejays will honor their senior class prior to the match with the Roos.
