Bluejay Men's Soccer Grants Billy’s Birthday Wish With 2-0 Win Over Xavier

Omaha, Neb. -- Firing off double digit shots in the second half, Creighton Men's Soccer defeated Xavier 2-0 to maintain first place in the BIG EAST Midwest Division on Saturday, October 11.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 7-3-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in BIG EAST action, while Xavier fell to 5-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.
Both of Creighton's goals came after the offense began to percolate in the second half, but the turning point of the match occurred in the second minute. After Xavier drew a foul just a foot outside the Creighton box, Musketeer Shogo Haraikawa fired a shot on from to the top left that resulted in a leaping punch out by Bluejay goalkeeper Matthew Hudson.
The remainder of the opening frame was a physical battle that saw Creighton manage just one shot and Xavier create only two more.
Knotted at 0-0 after the break the Bluejays returned to the pitch with an intensified sense of urgency. The Bluejays created three shots in the opening five minutes and broke through in the 54th minute (53:33) as Ryusei Shimonishi delivered his second goal of the season by finishing a run along the left side into the box. The tandem of Todd Vromant and Matthew Reed each collected assists as Vromant slid a pass to Reed on the right side of the box, then Reed found Shimonishi for the goal.
Creighton's pressure continued throughout the second half, firing 12 shots during the final 45 minutes. In the 86th minute (85:25) Miguel Arilla reclaimed his own saved shot to put the contest away with Creighton's second tally of the match.
At the close of the contest the Bluejays held a 13-6 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage on corners.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Friday, October 17 in a match at Villanova scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.
