Jalen Chaney and Olivia Sides are honored by BIG EAST
OMAHA, Neb. – Freshmen Jalen Chaney and Olivia Sides have been honored by the BIG EAST Conference after helping the Creighton Women's Soccer team clinch a BIG EAST Tournament berth for the second consecutive season with a 3-0 win over St. John's this past weekend. Chaney was named Freshman of the Week while Sides brought home Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
This marks the third BIG EAST weekly honor for Chaney as she was also named the BIG EAST Offensive and Freshman Player of the Week on Sept. 8. Sides, meanwhile, is picking up the first BIG EAST honor of her collegiate career.
Chaney played an intriguing role in the Bluejays victory, netting her fourth goal of the season off a centering pass from Kendal Radke to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute of the Jays victory over the Red Storm.
Sides on the other hand led the Bluejays backline to its fourth shutout of the season, while assisting on the game-winner with a beautifully-placed corner to sophomore Anna Bragg at the near post. Sides has been impressive throughout her first season as a Bluejay, recording a team-high tying four assists this year.
In addition, senior Alyssa Zalac earned a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll after recording her fourth shutout of the season, collecting two saves in the Bluejays victory over St. John's. Last Saturday's shutout marked Zalac's ninth career shutout, moving her into a tie for 10th on Creighton's career goalkeeper shutouts list.
Chaney, Sides, Zalac and the rest of the Creighton Women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Thursday, Nov. 6 as they open play in the BIG EAST Tournament against top-seeded and No. 12 ranked Georgetown at the Maryland Soccerplex at 6:30 p.m. CT.
