Debbie Conry and Jane Alseth to be recognized
Once Blue, Always Blue!
This year's Leaders for Life luncheon will take place on Friday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m. at D.J. Sokol Arena, inside the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center. Creighton Athletics will honor Jane Alseth, JD'72 with the Believe & Achieve Award and Debbie Conry, BA'77 with the Leader for Life Award. Both women have made an impact at Creighton and in the Omaha community.Â
Alseth is a Mercy High School graduate who attended Nebraska-Omaha before finishing up Law School with a degree from Creighton in 1972. She got started as an attorney at Federal Land Bank of Omaha and with InterNorth Inc. Alseth then served as an attorney/senior counsel for Enron Foundation before finishing up as the associate general counsel for Tenaska from 1998-2014.
The Omaha native has also been active in the community. She served on the City of Omaha Personnel Board from 2002-12, serving as Chairperson in 2010. In addition to being the Director of the Women's Center for Advancement from 2013-15, Alseth remains on the Board of Directors for Community Alliance, Board of Trustees for Mercy High School and the UNO Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies Advisory Board. On the Creighton campus Alseth has been part of the Jaybacker Executive Committee (2012-13), National Alumni Board (2013-16), Alumni Book Club (2019) and the Leaders for Life Committee (2018-Present).
Alseth and her late husband Jeffrey have a son Brian and a daughter Kathryn, both of whom earned degrees from Creighton as well.
Debbie Conry is the longest-tenured active coach at Creighton University, having served as head coach of the women's golf program since 1993. Over the past three decades, Debbie's leadership has built a program known for its commitment to academics, its success on the course, and its reputation as excellent representatives of Creighton's mission and values. On the course, the Bluejay women's golf team has improved its scoring average by more than 30 strokes over the past decade, and dozens of players have earned BIG EAST or Missouri Valley Conference recognition. In the classroom, Debbie's teams have ranked in the top 10 nationally in GPA in four of last 10 years. She was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year in 2022.
Conry attended CU from 1973-77 and was a seven-time letterwinner, including four letters in golf and three in basketball. From 1993-2007, she also coached the men's golf team simultaneously. She taught at Bellevue Public Schools for nearly 40 years, currently teaches at St. Vincent de Paul, and was honored with the Champion for Children Award in 2007.
Debbie and her husband, Kyle, have one daughter, Betsy, who played golf at CU from 2006-10.
