CAYCE, S.C. – The second-seeded Creighton men's tennis team opened the BIG EAST Tennis Championships Presented by JEEP with a 4-0 sweep over seventh-seeded Marquette on Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center to advance to the semifinals for just the second time in program history.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 15-10 on the year, while Marquette ended their season with a 4-17 overall record. Creighton advanced to the semifinals round where they will take on the winner of No. 4 Xavier and No. 3 Butler. Creighton's 15 wins this season are its most in a year since collecting 16 wins during the 1992-93 season.
"I was very impressed with how composed the team stayed from start to finish today," said assistant coach Matthew Lanahan. "They brought a ton of energy and played hard on all six courts. It was a good way to set the tone for the rest of the weekend."
The Bluejays stormed out of the gates, securing win at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to clinch the first point of the match. Junior's Kirtan Patel and Zachary Kuo cruised to a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot, before senior Alejandro Gandini and junior Yuma Daijima clinched the Bluejays 19th doubles point of the season with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 doubles position.
Creighton continued their winning ways into singles play, earning straight set victories at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions to complete the 4-0 sweep of Marquette.
Kuo got the Bluejays started with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over MU's Kristian Blagoev on the No. 4 singles court, while Daijima claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 singles slot to give Creighton a 3-0 lead.
Senior Ethan Neil would then clinch the overall dual with a 7-5, 6-4 straight sets win on the No. 6 singles court to capture the Bluejays 15 win of the season.
