Women’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to Iowa State in Home Opener, 1-0
8/21/2025 9:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. – Playing in front of the fourth largest crowd in program history (2,006), the Creighton Women's Soccer team pushed Iowa State to the brink before the visiting Cyclones escaped with a 1-0 victory in the Bluejays home opener on Thursday, Aug. 21.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 1-2-0 on the season, while Iowa State moved to 1-0-1.
Much like last year's contest, both teams played a very tight and physical match with neither team taking advantage of their chances in the opening 45 minutes of the contest.
Although Iowa State controlled possession throughout the first half, Creighton held a 6-2 edge in shots at the break with its best scoring chance coming in the 21st minute on a free kick, when Ariana Mondiri nearly gave the Jays' a 1-0 lead but bounced a shot off the near post.
Iowa State and Creighton traded blows in the second half, before a late push from the Bluejays was stymied with a game-winning counterattack from the Cyclones in the 89th minute.
A long corner kick from CU led to a breakout the other way as a loose ball was corralled and cleared by ISU's Ella Ciardullo. Ciardullo sent a ball crossfield and ahead down the near sideline to Isabella Agrusso, who had two Bluejay defenders chasing on her hip. Creighton's goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac came out of the box to challenge nearly 40 yards from the net but was just late to the spot as Agrusso lofted the ball over her head and into the goal to secure the 1-0 victory for the Cyclones.
Creighton finished the match with a 15-9 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Olivia Duray, Brynn Gardner and Mondiri led the way with a game-high three shots, while both Gardner and Mallory Connealy place a game-high two shots on goal.
The Bluejays will have a week off before returning to the pitch to take on Western Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.
