Creighton scores three unanswered goals to claim eight consecutive win over Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. -- Trailing 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining, the Creighton Women's Soccer team used a penalty kick from Ariana Mondiri and a game-winning header from Mallory Connealy in the final minute to propel the Bluejays to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over crosstown rival Omaha during Wednesday's Kicks for a Cure match at Morrison Stadium.
With the win, Creighton improved to 2-4-1 on the season, picking up its eighth consecutive win over the Mavericks and snapping a 14-match winless streak when allowing at least two goals. UNO, meanwhile, dropped their fourth consecutive match, falling to 2-4-2 overall.
Omaha dominated the opening 45 minutes, taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room. UNO's Charley Kort opened the scoring in the 10th minute bending a free kick around a Bluejay wall and into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Mavericks a 1-0 advantage. Twenty minutes later, Omaha extended their lead to 2-0, converting once again off a set piece as Kort headed home her second goal of the evening off a corner kick from Grace Bartlam.
Although Omaha converted on two of their four shots in the opening frame, Creighton controlled possession and fired seven shots on goal setting the stage for a dramatic second half.
Creighton came out of the locker room on a mission, cutting the deficit in half in the 64th minute when Kendal Radke slotted a shot past the Mavericks backline for the first goal of her Bluejay career. Junior Tejia Murray-Powell was credited with an assist on the play, after recovering a loose ball and dishing a pass to Radke in the middle of the 18-yard box off a corner kick from Brynn Gardner.
Down 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining, the Bluejay flipped momentum in their favor as Mondiri delivered the equalizer in the 88th minute. Earning a penalty kick for the second time this season on a handball in the box, Mondiri stepped to the circle and buried her second goal of the season to level the match at 2-2.
Creighton then delivered the game-winner with 29 second remaining in the match as Jess Torres lifted a cross into the center of the 18-yard box as Connealy made her run. The Bluejays connection delivered the game-winner as Connealy headed a laser into the back of the net to secure the 3-2 win for the Bluejays.
Creighton's three unanswered goals in the second half marked the first time that Creighton has scored at least three goals in back-to-back matches since 2019.
The Bluejays closed the match with a 24-4 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior Alyssa Zalac collected just one save while picking up her second win of the season in goal.
Creighton will return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12:30 p.m. when they host South Dakota on Senior Day.
