Strong Doubles Play Carries Men’s Tennis to 5-2 Victory Over Saint Louis

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team used a dominate doubles performance and a fast start in singles play to help propel the Bluejays to a 5-2 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 7-5 with the victory, while the Billikens fell to 2-6 overall with the loss.
Creighton stormed out to an 1-0 lead after capturing victories on all three doubles courts. Sophomore Rocky McKenzie and freshman Jack McMahon claimed a 6-2 win on the No. 1 court, before seniors Yuma Daijima and Kirtan Patel clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles position. Senior Zachary Kuo and freshman Mathis Dahler also earned a 6-4 win at the No. 3 doubles spot to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
The Jays continued to stay hot, claiming straight set wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions to take a 3-0 lead. Patel cruised to a quick 6-0, 6-0 straight sets win on the No. 2 singles court, before Kuo captured a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 singles spot.
Saint Louis, however, clawed their way back into the match, securing straight sets wins on the No. 3 and No. 5 singles courts to cut into the Bluejays lead. Andres Castellanos earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 3 single spot, while Adrien Ducruet claimed a 6-4, 6-4 triumph on the No. 5 singles court to cut the deficit to 3-2.
With the match on the line, Daijima delivered a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory at the top singles spot in crunch time to seal the victory for the Bluejays. McMahon added in a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 come-from-behind three-set win over Riki Koshimizu on the No. 6 singles court to close out the Jays' 5-2 victory.
Creighton will return to the Hanscom Tennis Center tomorrow afternoon for a 12 p.m. match against Northwest Missouri State.
