Makena Silber was named a graduate assistant coach with the Creighton women’s soccer program in July of 2024.
A native of Crystal Lake, Ill., Silber comes to Creighton as a graduate assistant after capping off an illustrious five-year playing career at Illinois. The two-time All-Big Ten performer, guided the Fighting Illini to 44 total victories while finishing her career ranking eighth all-time in program history with 21 goals scored, eighth in game-winning goals with seven and ninth in total shots with 187 in 83 total appearances.
“This opportunity to join not only an elite coaching staff and university, but to also gain the privilege of working with a group of incredible female student-athlete is one that I have an immense amount of gratitude for,” said Silber. “The program that is being built here at Creighton is one to be extremely excited about and to be joining at as such a time as this leaves no doubt in my mind about the valuable journey that I know I’ll have as a Bluejay. Go Jays!”
“We’re excited to have Makena on board as she comes highly recommended from the coaching staff at Illinois,” said Walker. “Makena was an elite player having a very successful career in the Big Ten Conference. In my time getting to know Makena, she has displayed a great soccer mind and has a passion for coaching. She will be a good addition to staff, having been around the top-level of women’s college soccer. We can’t wait for her to get started with the team.”
After netting five goals and earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors in 2018, Silber posted arguably the best season of her career as a junior in 2020, recording three game-winning goals in just 12 matches to claim Third Team All-Big Ten and United Soccer Coaches Association All-North Region Third Team honors.
Silber graduated from Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in general psychology in December of 2023. She will be pursuing a master’s degree from Creighton in integrative health and wellness.
