John Wissler enters his sixth year as the men’s head cross country coach at Creighton.
He also coordinates Operation Bluejay, a community service program that gives Creighton student-athletes and coaches a chance to give back to the Omaha-area organizations and schools that support them. Wissler has spent 30 years coaching cross country athletes in the Omaha area, garnering numerous local and national honors in that span. Working with the Cornhusker Flyers Track Club, Wissler has coached over 100 national individual champions and has 15 top-three finishes in the National Track and Cross Country Championship team races.
Wissler’s career achievements include the Ralston Young Man of the Year, the Ace Award (presented to the outstanding educator by the Ralston Board of Education), and the Sevigne Award and Presidents Award given by U.S. Track and Field for outstanding contributions to the sport. He was the first recipient of the Contributor Award from the Omaha High School Cross Country Coaches Association for his service to the sport.
He also has served as the national vice president of youth track and field, served as the national chair of the Youth Track Coaches Association, was a four-time meet director of the National Championship in Track and Field and Cross Country and a three-time meet director of the National Junior Olympic Championships.
Wissler also founded the Cornhusker Flyer Track Club and the Nebraska Cultural Exchange program. In 2001, Wissler served as the distance coach for the United States World Team, which competed in Debrechen, Hungary.
From 1983 through 1998, Wissler served as the director of athletics and activities at Ralston (Neb.) High School. While at Ralston he helped found the River Cities Conference. He also served as Metro Conference Cross Country meet director for 10 years during his time at Ralston.
His career in athletics began in 1973 when he served as a physical education instructor at Blumfield Elementary School in Ralston, until 1983. He is a 1972 graduate of Doane College in Crete, Neb.
