Mike Current joined the Creighton staff as recruiting coordinator and hitting coach in the summer of 2024.  In his first season, Current helped the Bluejays to the 2025 BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles, the program’s first since 2019, and set a BIG EAST record for conference wins with 17.
Under his direction, the offense improved in nearly every area in his first season.  Bluejay hitters registered an .842 OPS in BIG EAST play, which was a 76-point improvement over the previous season.  The Bluejays also averaged 8.19 runs per game, which was more than two runs better than 2024.  Nolan Sailors, Connor Capece and Matt Scherrman all made significant strides on their way to collecting  All-BIG EAST Second Team honors.
Before joining the Bluejays, Current spent the previous seven seasons at the University of South Carolina, where he served as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for two seasons and Director of Player Development for five seasons.  During his time in Columbia, Current helped the Gamecocks to four NCAA Tournament berths, including Super Regional appearances in 2018 and 2023 and regional hosts in 2021 and 2023.  The Gamecocks also reached as high as No. 2 in the polls during the 2023 season.
Â
During his time at USF, Current helped Kevin Merrell become the third-highest drafted player in program history (33rd overall by the Oakland Athletic).  Merrell was also named an All-American by four different publications.  He also played a major role in the development of David Villar and Coco Montes, both of whom have since reached the Major Leagues.
Current arrived at USF after playing a major role in the transformation of the Illinois State University program during a nine-year stint in Normal. Over his final five seasons, ISU racked up 173 wins and picked up a pair of Missouri Valley Conference regular season championships, an MVC tournament title and twice set the program’s record for wins. Illinois State hitters led the MVC in runs scored and OPS three times in his final four seasons, while 19 Redbird position players earned All-MVC honors and 10 were named first team all-conference, both were more than any other MVC team over that time period.
A total of 53 student-athletes earned All-MVC honors under Current at Illinois State, including Kevin Tokarski who became the first Redbird ever to win MVC Player of the Year honors in 2010 and Paul DeJong who went on to place second in the 2017 NL Rookie of the Year balloting and was named an NL All-Star in 2019.
Current, who earned his master’s degree in sport management from Illinois State in May 2007 and bachelor’s degree in communication from Blackburn College in May 2005, resides in Elkhorn with his wife, Heather, and their children Evelyn and Cooper.

Â
In Current’s first season as hitting coach in 2018, Gamecock hitters registered an OPS of .815, which was a 71-point improvement over the previous season, and the best the program had seen since its 2010 national championship run.  Current was instrumental in the development of outfielders Carlos Cortes, TJ Hopkins and Brady Allen, all of whom were drafted in the top 10 rounds, with Hopkins since reaching the Major Leagues.  In all, 11 of the hitters Current worked with in his two seasons as hitting coach went on to be drafted.

Prior to his time at South Carolina, Current spent three seasons at the University of South Florida, serving as the team’s assistant coach, recruiting coordinator, hitting coach and working with the outfielders. From 2015-17, Current helped the Bulls make a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, breaking a 12-year drought.  In his final season in 2017, the Bulls won 42 games, which was the program’s highest win total since 1996 and also cracked the D1Baseball Top 25 for the first time in program history.

In all, Current has helped seven teams reach the NCAA Tournament, including two Super Regional berths.  He has also seen 76 of his players drafted, including three 1st round picks, 28 top 10 round picks and 13 of whom have reached the Major Leagues.  Twice he has helped programs set a record for draft picks in a single season - six at Illinois State in 2014 and 10 at South Carolina in 2018.  In addition, he has overseen four nationally ranked recruiting classes as recruiting coordinator: 2015 (6th), 2018 (12th), 2019 (3rd) and 2020 (5th).
