Steve Lutz enters his seventh season at Creighton as an assistant coach, where he also serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator.
While at Creighton, Lutz works with the Bluejay frontcourt, recruiting and scouting of future opponents. Those recruiting efforts helped bring in five-star center prospect Justin Patton last fall.
In his first season, two Bluejay guards were honored by the MVC, as Jahenns Manigat was named to the All-Freshman Team while Antoine Young was a Second Team All-Valley pick after pacing the league in assists. Lutz helped assemble the nation’s No. 8-ranked non-BCS recruiting class in the fall of 2010.
In 2011-12, Young repeated as a Second Team All-MVC pick, while Grant Gibbs was runner-up for MVC Newcomer of the Year plaudits and earned a spot on the MVC’s All-Newcomer Team. In addition, Doug McDermott was named Valley Player of the Year and a First Team All-American and Gregory Echenique was named MVC Defensive Player of the Year.
In 2012-13, McDermott repeated as a First Team All-American while Gibbs and Echenique were both tabbed Honorable Mention All-Valley. Creighton swept the MVC regular-season and tournament titles in 2012-13.
Creighton’s first season in the BIG EAST (2013-14) saw the Bluejays lead the nation in three-pointers made, three-point percentage and assist/turnover ratio, while also ranking second in three-pointers per game and assists per game. In addition, McDermott would go on to sweep all 14 National Player of the Year awards.
Creighton has won 141 of 213 games in the past six seasons, making three NCAA Tournament and one NIT appearance. Creighton tied the school record with 29 wins in 2011-12, then had 28 more wins in 2012-13 before 27 in 2013-14.
Lutz arrived at Creighton in the summer of 2010 after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach under Matt Doherty at SMU.
Lutz was recruiting coordinator for SMU during his time there, and his first two recruiting classes were ranked in the top-35 nationally by Hoop Scoop Online. Those recruiting classes included Conference USA All-Freshman honorees Paul McCoy (2008-09) and Papa Dia (2007-08). In his fourth season, SMU finished with its most wins, best finish and best conference tournament seed since joining Conference USA for the 2005-06 season.
He remains a member of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, serving on its Board of Directors from 2007-10.
Lutz has 21 previous seasons of experience as a college assistant. He also spent four seasons at Incarnate Word in his hometown of San Antonio, followed by a season at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, and then six years at Stephen F. Austin. His teams have totaled a 361-229 record for an overall .612 winning percentage.
Lutz has had 21 players earn 32 all-conference accolades, five players garner eight All-America honors, along with 17 players named league player of the week on 48 occasions. He’s also had 11 players total 19 academic all-conference awards and two student-athletes named Academic All-America three times.
At Stephen F. Austin, Lutz served as the Lumberjacks’ recruiting coordinator and assisted in all phases of game preparation with coach Danny Kaspar. Two of his recruiting classes were ranked tops in the Southland Conference. In six seasons at Stephen F. Austin, the Lumberjacks went 93-76, including a 71-44 mark his final four years.
Lutz also spent four seasons as an assistant to Kaspar at Incarnate Word in San Antonio. During those four seasons, the Crusaders went 99-20, winning three regular-season Heart of Texas Conference titles and capturing the conference postseason tournament in each of his final three seasons. He also spent one season at Incarnate Word as the head golf coach.
At Incarnate Word, the final NAIA regular-season national ranking improved each year: 23rd, 10th, ninth and first. He also spent the 1999-2000 season as an assistant to Jeremy Cox at Garden City Community College where his team went 24-9 and finished third in the Jayhawk Western Conference.
Lutz played basketball for three seasons at Texas Lutheran and served as the team captain as a senior. He earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran in 1995 and his M.Ed., at Incarnate Word in 1997. Lutz played one season at Ranger Junior College prior to his arrival at Texas Lutheran.
He and his wife Shannon have two daughters, Caroline (13) and McKenna (11), and one son, Jackson (4).
