The Rasmussen Fitness & Sports Center was dedicated on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 at 702 N. 17th St. Named for Creighton Director of Athletics Bruce Rasmussen, the facility was made possible by generous gifts from Ruth and Bill Scott and several other donors.
“This facility, along with the completed Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center and the D.J. Sokol Arena, ensures that Creighton remains competitive in attracting today’s students, who truly appreciate comprehensive social, recreational and health experiences as part of their college years,” said Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., Creighton University President.“The center will also be instrumental in encouraging and supporting our faculty and staff with their wellness activities,” he added.
The 50,000-square-foot building with a mezzanine will house a multipurpose field house with synthetic turf for intramural sports and athletic team practices, a suspended two-lane running track, and a fitness level furnished with cardio, circuit-training and free-weight equipment.
Ruth and Bill Scott have been long-time supporters and friends of Creighton University. In 1995 the Scotts established a scholarship for international students who enrolled in the School of Medicine.
The Nebraska natives have deep roots in the Omaha community and since the 90’s have donated millions of dollars to more than 100 different organizations.
Exercise is part of Bill Scott’s daily routine. “Several years ago I was severely injured in a fall. This experience and my subsequent recovery reinforced the importance of health and wellness activities for everyone, no matter what your age. This convenient facility will be a visible reminder, for all students, faculty and staff, of the investment Creighton makes in the whole person—mind, body and spirit. And I can’t think of a finer person than Bruce Rasmussen to honor with this legacy,” said Bill Scott.
