Men's Tennis Opens Play At Sprint PCS Fall Classic

DES MOINES, Iowa - Creighton's men's tennis team opened play at the 2001 Sprint PCS Fall Tennis Classic on Friday and senior Pierre-Marc Villeneuve (Montreal, Quebec / Ecole Secondary) advanced to the quarterfinal round in Flight A singles play.
Villeneuve outlasted Drake's Aaron Endress-Fox, 7-5, 6-7 (1), 6-3, in a three-and-a-half hour first-round battle before losing to Lance Mills of Nebraska by scores of 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the quarters. Villeneuve will face Harry Walsh of Northern Iowa in the consolation bracket on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Senior Oliver Floth (Vienna, Austria / Realgymnasium) lost his first-round match against Nebraska's Jose Hernan, 6-2, 7-5, but was able to rebound with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Felipe Montenegro of Drake in the consolation bracket. Floth will play Northern Iowa's Khambula Msiska on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
The only other Creighton victory on Friday was recorded by freshman Richard Gonzalez (Omaha / Creighton Prep), who fought for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Drake's Zlatko Letica in the Flight B consolation bracket.
Overall, Creighton combined for a 3-9 mark in singles and an 0-3 record in its three doubles matches.
