NEW YORK, N.Y. - Former Creighton All-American forward Brian Mullan (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit) has signed a four-year contract with Major League Soccer, increasing his chances of being drafted by one of the 12 teams in the nation's premier professional soccer league.
Mullan is one of five collegiate standouts to sign with MLS in 2001. Joining Mullan are Duke's Ali Curtis, Bradley's Bryan Namoff, Richmond's Craig Ziadie and UAB's David Clemente. All five players will be available for selection in the six-round 2001 MLS SuperDraft on Monday, Feb. 5, at the Signature Grand in Davie, Florida.
The forward's scoring exploits helped the Bluejays to an appearance in the 2000 NCAA College Cup Finals, the first time in school history that any team had played in a national championship game. A second-team NSCAA All-American as a senior, Mullan led Creighton in scoring with 49 points on 18 goals and 13 assists. He capped his career by breaking Johnny Torres' (New England Revolution) school record for career points in NCAA Tournament play with 16 points (six goals, four assists). Torres had set the mark with 13 points (five goals, three assists) in NCAA Tourney play.
Mullan is the seventh Creighton player to sign with MLS, joining Steve Bernal, Brian Kamler, Richard Mulrooney, Ross Paule, Angel Rivillo and Johnny Torres.
Mullan will take part in the sixth annual Umbro Select All-Star Classic Feb. 3 at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The exhibition game is held in conjunction with the start of MLS spring training in the Fort Lauderdale area and is used to showcase many of the nation's top seniors to scouts prior to the annual MLS Player Draft. The 18-player teams representing the East and the West will begin training together Feb. 1.
