Terre Haute, Ind. Gretta Arveson's goal with 2:08 left in the first half proved to be enough as Creighton beat Indiana State 2-1, Friday afternoon. Creighton improves its unbeaten Missouri Valley Conference record to 2-0-1 and 6-5-2 overall.
"We played well in the first half," commented Head Coach Bruce Erickson. "We fought hard and I'm pleased with the way we finished the game off."
The Jays got on the board at the 10:55 mark of the first half courtesy of an own-goal by Indiana State. A Sycamore defender unsuccessfully tried to head out a ball played into the box and it snuck into the back of the net.
Arveson's game-winner came off a corner kick. The native of Pine Springs, Minn., got to the ball after it bounced around in traffic and beat ISU's goalkeeper Rachel Rudzis back post. The goal was Arveson's first of the season and second career tally.
Nichole Tiggs got the Sycamore's on the board 1:37 into the first half when she took a loose ball in front of CU's goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer and rippled the net. Tiggs' tally was an historical one, as she broke ISU's single season goal record with her seventh of the year.
Zimmerer received her fourth consecutive start in net for the Bluejays and made a season high eight saves. An even matchup all around saw Creighton out-shot ISU 17-16. CU placed eight shots on goal compared to ISU's six. Corner kicks for the match were tied at seven apiece.
Creighton will continue its road trip Sunday, Oct. 10, at 1:00 p.m. against Evansville.
