Des Moines, Iowa -- Lonnie Randolph had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists as Drake (10-12, 6-8 MVC) scored nine unanswered points in the final 33 seconds of double-overtime to rally and beat Creighton (18-4, 10-4 MVC), 78-73.
Creighton led for all but one possession of the first half and took a 33-26 lead into the half. The Jays pushed their lead to 52-41 with 7:39 to play on a tip-in by Brody Deren. A lay-in by Drake's Josh Powell would spark a 14-0 run that gave them the lead with 3:57 to go.
The game remained close as Drake's Nate Richie buried a trey from the corner to put the Bulldogs up 58-57 with 57 seconds left. Creighton moved back ahead when Mike Grimes was fouled on an offensive putback and sank two free throws to go up 59-58 with 27 seconds left. Powell would answer with a tip-in to go ahead by one with 11.2 seconds left. Working without a timeout, Creighton pushed the ball upcourt and sophomore Nate Funk was fouled on a drive to the basket. Funk, an 86 percent free throw shooter, missed the first attempt but drained his second to knot the score at 60. Randolph missed a desperation three-pointer from 30 feet to send it to overtime.
In the first overtime, Kellen Miliner drew first blood with a basket with 3:34 left. Drake's Klayton Korver evened the score with a shot from the wing. A jumper by Pete Eggers from the elbow gave Drake a 64-62 lead with 50 seconds left, only to have Creighton tie it when Joe Dabbert tipped in his own miss with 20 seconds to play. A potential game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left by Korver missed, sending it to double-overtime.
Creighton took early control in the second overtime, moving ahead 71-66 as Deren split two free throws with 2:40 to play. A three-point play by David Bancroft made it 71-69 with 2:24 to go. Creighton's Funk hit a jumper in the lane with 32.3 seconds to go to go ahead 73-69 before Drake's furious comeback.
Randolph hit a lay-up with 26.8 seconds left to make it a two-point margin. CU threw away the inbounds pass and Sean Tracy controlled it, drove to the basket and was fouled. Tracy's three-point play put the Bulldogs up by one with 19.1 seconds to play. Yet another Bluejay turnover was swiped by Randolph, who sank a pair of free throws with 16.3 seconds left to make it a three-point game.
CU's Johnny Mathies missed a three-pointer from the corner that could've tied it with eight seconds left, and Korver iced the win with a pair of free throws with 6.5 seconds to go.
With the win, Drake improved to 10-12 overall and 6-8 in the MVC. Randolph had 19 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Korver, the younger brother of former CU All-American Kyle Korver, had 14 points, while Powell added 12 points. The Bulldogs shot 38.1 percent but outrebounded Creighton 43-38 and shot 85.2 percent (23-27) at the line.
