Katie Werges, the lone unanimous selection, was among 27 student-athletes named as Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes for 2005, by a vote of the league's sports information directors. Creighton's Leah Ratzlaff and Lindsay Stalzer of Bradley both earned a place on the first-team for the third-straight year.
Wichita State posted the most spots on the first-team and honorable mention list with a combined total of six. Missouri State was second with four and Creighton, Drake and Illinois all notched three. The Bluejays totaled a league-high three players on the first-team.
Werges, a Graphic Design major, carries a 3.91 grade-point-average and was named to the 2005 ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All District VII Team. The Washington, Mo., product earned first-team laurels last season. Stalzer holds a 3.30 in Mechanical Engineering, and owns the MVC record for kills in a season and career. Ratzlaff posts a 3.72 in Psychology, and etched her name into the Creighton record books as its all-time kill leader.
Other repeat first-team members: Andee Hartig and Elizabeth Meyers of Wichita State and Illinois State's Emily Kabbes.
Creighton's Abby Baumann and Emily Greisch, Gillian Falknor of Bradley, UNI's Stephanie Germann, Sarah Smith of Indiana State and Ashley Warren of Missouri State close out the first-team.
The Shockers had four players named honorable mention: Sara Lungren, Cori Meyer, Jen Ray and Darci Vohs. Drake's Betsy Funk, Samantha Nelson and Megan Veltman earned positions on the honorable mention list.
Sabrina Apker and Katie Kreimer of Missouri State, Southern Illinois' Katy DeWulf and Johannah Yutzy, Lacy Haller and Elaine Walroth of Evansville and Illinois State's Lindley McDavid and Kari Staehlin round out the honorable mention list.
A total of 52 student-athletes were nominated for the 2005 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, marking the 14th-straight season that at least 30 Valley players were under consideration for league academic honors.
The criteria for the Valley's Scholar-Athlete Team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular season, reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institution and completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
