OMAHA, Neb. - Michelle Kaus led five Bluejays in double figures against Iowa Sunday afternoon at the Civic Auditorium, but the Hawkeyes made 23-of-25 free-throw shots to help them get by a scrappy Creighton women's basketball team, 75-69. Kaus had 14 points as she made her first four three-point attempts in the game, but despite one of their best efforts of the season, the Jays dropped to 0-5 on the year with the loss.
After Iowa (6-1) jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the game, the Bluejays scored the game's next 10 points, keyed by a pair of Kaus three-pointers. CU opened up its largest lead of the game on another Kaus trey, going up 20-14 with 11 minutes to play in the first half. The Jays held onto the lead until Megan Skouby tied the game with just over four minutes left in the first half and Kristi Smith put the Hawkeyes up 31-28 with a three-pointer on Iowa's next possession.
Iowa took a 33-32 advantage into halftime and would not relinquish the lead, pushing to its largest lead of the game, 53-42, with 10 minutes to play. But the Bluejays would not go away, scoring the next eight points to get within three with 6:29 to play. The Hawkeyes continued to make their free-throws, sinking their first 22 attempts from the charity stripe in the victory and ended with a 23-13 scoring edge from the line.
For the second straight game against a Big 10 foe, Kaus came out on fire, scoring 12 of her team-high 14 in the first half. The sophomore sharp-shooter has now made 10 three-pointers in her last two games, making 10-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc in that span. Des Moines, Iowa native, Ally Thrall chipped in 12 points for the Jays.
A trio of front court players all finished with 11 points. Kristina Voss, an Ankeny, Iowa native, led the team with seven rebounds along with her 11 points. Walford, Iowa native Sara Cain also had 11 points. Redshirt freshman Megan Neuvirth also had a career-best 11 points and topped the team with three steals. Rookie forward Sam Schuett led the Jays with a career-best three assists. The Bluejays went the entire 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons without five players scoring in double figures in a game, and have not had five score at least 10 in a game since March 19, 2004 at Colorado State in the WNIT.
Smith led five players in double figures for the Hawkeyes with a game-high 15 points. Wendy Ausdemore and Stacy Schlapkohl had 12 apiece, while both Abby Emmert and Jenee Graham finished with 10 points for Iowa.
The Bluejays, 0-5 for the first time since 1996-97 when they started with seven straight losses, will look for their first win of the season on Friday at Missouri. The Bluejays will play in the State Farm Tiger Classic in Columbia, Mo., this weekend, playing Mizzou Friday at 7 p.m. They will then play either Alabama A&M or Eastern Illinois on Saturday at Mizzou Arena. Both games will be broadcast on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
