OMAHA, Neb. - Kristina Voss' career-high 15 points helped push Creighton to its third win in four games as the Bluejays held off Oral Roberts for a 72-64 victory at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Thursday night. Voss also topped the team with eight rebounds as the Jays improved to 3-8 on the year while dropping the Golden Eagles to 7-4.
The Bluejays never trailed in the game, as Voss got her career-night underway with a layup to start the scoring. An Elisha Turek jumper for ORU cut CU's lead to three points 4:30 into the game, before the Jays unleashed a 17-0 run to take control of the contest. Two Tyrai Bronson three-pointers aided the large run, giving the Jays a 28-8 lead with just under 10 to play in the first half. CU's largest lead in the first half was 23 after a pair of Sam Schuett free-throws made it 42-19.
Voss had 11 points and seven rebounds in 13 first-half minutes, while the Jays forced 11 first-half turnovers by the Eagles. Creighton converted those turnovers into 12 points in the first half, while the Jays did not commit a turnover until nearly eight minutes into play and finished with just four give-aways in the first stanza.
CU showed no let up after the break, gaining a 25-point lead early in the second half. ORU would not back down, aided by a 31-point performance by Turek. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native scored 19 in the second half and finished with a game-high 11 rebounds as ORU cut the Jays' 25-point margin all the way down to six inside of two minutes to play. The Jays made 4-of-6 free-throws in the final minute to hold off the Eagles.
Voss played a career-high 26 minutes, finishing 5-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-7 at the free-throw line. Ally Thrall added 14 points and a team-high six assists for CU in the winning effort. Bronson finished with a career-best three three-pointers for nine points in a career-best 24 minutes off the bench.
The Jays tied a season-low with 13 turnovers, while swiping 11 steals in the game, paced by Schuett's three thefts. CU and ORU finished even on the boards at 37.
After dropping its first seven games of the year, CU has won three of its last four games heading into Missouri Valley Conference play. ORU, who was picked to win the Mid-Continent Conference had already topped Wichita State this year. The Shockers were picked to place second in MVC play. The Jays are now 6-1 all-time against ORU and Jim Flanery is a perfect 5-0 against the Mid-Con.
Creighton returns to action on the road after Christmas. The Bluejays open conference play at Illinois State (7-3) on Dec. 29. CU and ISU will tip at 8:35 p.m., following a Redbird men's game. The Jays' game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
