CU's lone goal of the match found the back of the net off of Pietari Holopainen's corner kick. The ball sent into the box bounced off of a Fighting Irish defender and into the goal just 1:55 into the match.
The Bluejays held the lead until the 14th minute, when Justin McGeeney scored his first goal of the match off an assist from Nate Norman. The Irish claimed the lead for good when McGeeney again found the back of the net in the 18th minute. Notre Dame (1-1-0) tacked on two more goals in the second half to extend its lead to 4-1.
"I thought the team actually played much better today than it did on Friday (a 1-0 two overtime loss to No. 12 Indiana), and I thought we played pretty well in that match," said head coach Bob Warming. "Notre Dame scored some great goals on us, shots that nobody was going to stop. This was a great learning weekend for us and I know that if we apply what we learned then great things are ahead for this group."
Back-up goalkeeper Nathan Gibson, a Division II All-American transfer from
Senior forward Michael Kraus and sophomore midfielder Seth Sinovic were named to the all-tournament team.
"We're looking forward to getting home and getting healthy," said Warming. "Right now we've got 12 guys that are injured and we're having trouble getting significant minutes out of some key guys. We are excited about playing in our home stadium and expect a great crowd turnout Friday."
The Bluejays open the home portion of the 2006 schedule on Friday, when they play host to the Ameritas Classic and
