OMAHA, Neb. Freshman Chris Schuler knocked in the game-winning goal in the 99th minute for the Creighton men's soccer team as the eighth-ranked Bluejays defeated Georgetown 3-2 in overtime Friday night in the Jays' home opener in front of 3,746 at Morrison Stadium. Schuler was the second CU freshman to score on the night, as the Jays picked up their first victory of the season at the Ameritas Classic.
Schuler's goal at 98:24 was set up off of junior Tim Bohnenkamp's second successive corner kick. This corner went to the far post where freshman Thomas Gjoesund was able to deflect the ball back to the middle where Schuler was able to gather it and blast the game-winning tally into the net from close range.
"I am so proud of our guys with the way they battled tonight," said head coach Bob Warming, who improved to 9-0-2 in home openers as the Bluejays' leader. "Georgetown is a much improved team from last year and I think they will go on to win a lot of games this season. I really thought we could have had four or five goals there in the first half, but just couldn't find the net. Tony Schmitz played a fantastic game in the middle and Tim Bohnenkamp is a nightmare matchup for opponents right now, with the speed and confidence he is showing out there."
The game-winner ended a scoring drought in the match, after the first four goals of the contest were scored in the first 24 minutes of play. Bluejay freshman and Omaha native Jeff Thayer got the scoring started in the fifth minute when he knocked in a long pass from Andrew Peterson at 4:37.
Georgetown (1-2-0) answered with the next two goals of the match. Mike Glaccum put the Hoyas on the board first at 19:56 and then Daniel Grasso's third goal of the year off an assist from Ricky Schramm gave GU the lead at 23:25.
The Bluejays (1-2-0) responded with their own equalizer at 27:02, when Bohnenkamp sent in a low line drive across the net and into the far side after gathering a loose ball just outside the top of the box.
Bohnenkamp, an Omaha native enjoys playing in his home town, as he now has 24 points in his career, with 20 coming at Morrison Stadium. Schmitz led all players with six shots from his attacking slot.
Creighton takes on Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday in the final match of the tournament. FDU topped Missouri State 2-1 in double overtime to open the event on Friday afternoon, establishing a Morrison Stadium record with 29 shots. The Bluejays and Knights kick off at 7 p.m. Sunday.
