Men's Soccer Wins Ameritas Classic, Ties Fairleigh Dickinson
9/3/2006 3:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's soccer team captured the title at the Ameritas Classic Sunday night at Morrison Stadium, dominating play against Fairleigh Dickinson (2-1-1), but settling on a scoreless draw after two overtime periods. The tie gave both squads a 1-0-1 record at the tournament, with the Bluejays taking the goals scored tie-breaker (3-2) to earn the title.
The No. 8 Bluejays (1-2-1) had several chances to score the game winning goal, as they out-shot the Knights 24-6 in the match, dominating play from halftime on. The Jays controlled the ball nearly the entire second half, out-shooting FDU 18-2 after halftime, including a 4-0 edge in the overtime periods. The Jays held a 9-1 advantage over FDU in corner kicks, including 7-1 in the second half.
Perhaps CU's best scoring chance came off a well-developed play in which the FDU keeper, Elvir Prasovic, stopped a Michael Kraus header in the 65th minute. The FDU defense snuffed out a flurry of CU chances between the 81st and 86th minute, as the Bluejays unloaded four shots and had three corner kicks in just that five minute span. Danny Minutillo missed a golden opportunity as his open look in the 83rd minute went wide, while Kraus had another shot on goal stopped in the 86th minute.
The Jays managed three more shot in the first overtime, including a shot on goal by Minutillo. Jarod Tarver's header off a crossing pass in the second overtime proved to be CU's best chance at the golden goal, as it had Prasovic beat, but went wide.
Prasovic stopped seven shots for FDU in the shutout, while the Bluejay defense limited the Knights to only six shots, two of which Matt Allen stopped in goal. All the more impressive is the fact that FDU had just launched a Morrison Stadium record 29 shots in a 2-1 win over Missouri State Friday night.
Kraus was named tournament MVP, as his hustle and determination set the tone for the CU attack. He attempted five shots, three on goal in the draw. Freshman defenders Chris Schuler and Thomas Gjoesund along with junior midfielder Tim Bohnenkamp were also named to the all-tournament squad.
FDU finished second in the event, with Donny Mayard, Alejandro Bedoya and Rico Geromel earning all-tournament honors. Missouri State topped Georgetown 2-0 earlier in the day, as Ryan Anderson and Justin Douglass earned all-tourney recognition for the Bears. Georgetown's Mike Glaccum and Len Coleman were also honored.
The Bluejays return to the road next weekend, playing against UW-Milwaukee and Wisconsin in Madison. The Jays and UWM kickoff at 5 p.m. Friday.
