
Volleyball Swept By Shockers, Fall Into First Place Tie

OMAHA, Neb. -- Wichita State moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference volleyball standings with 3-0 win over host Creighton on Friday night in Omaha. Scores in favor of the Shockers were 30-26, 30-24, 30-18.
Both teams are now 7-1 in the MVC and tied with Missouri State, which won in four games at Drake on Friday night. WSU is 15-4 on the season and winners of 24 straight MVC road matches, while CU dropped to 13-6 overall and saw a six-match win streak get snapped.
WSU was paced by a match-high 16 kills from Winthrop transfer Emily Stockman, who also added 10 digs and five blocks. Stephanie Tokarz had 12 kills and six blocks as well for the visitors. WSU hit .310 and finished with 55 kills, two aces, 70 digs and 11 blocks.
Creighton was led by 15 kills on .438 hitting from Kelly Goc, while freshman Allie Oelke also had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Creighton had 51 kills, four aces, 68 digs and two blocks while hitting .176.
The first game included 13 ties and four lead changes while the teams exchanged sideouts through all but five of the first 30 points. CU's Lauren Bloemke served consecutive aces after a Shocker timeout at 17-15 to give the Jays their biggest lead of the night at 19-15. WSU quietly stormed back to retake the lead at 24-23, and won eight of the final 10 points to take the first game by a 30-26 score. CU's Goc had seven kills while Bloemke had five kills, two aces and a block in the first game for the Jays. In addition, Korie Lebeda had 19 assists in game one alone.
Though Creighton took an early 4-1 lead in game two, the visitors would not be denied. WSU took their first lead at 10-9 and used a 3-0 run to take a 16-14 lead that they never relinquished. Stockman had five kills and four blocks in the second game. The Shockers had seven blocks in game two, which helped them to an 11-2 blocking victory on the night. WSU had 21 kills and 21 digs in the second game, including five of each from 2006 MVC Player of the Year Sara Lungren.
The third game was tight at the midway point with WSU owning a 15-14 lead before the Shockers took over. WSU would end the night with nine straight points on Angela Jakubov's serve for the 30-18 decision. Stockman had five kills and four blocks in the second game. The
Shockers had seven blocks in game three, which helped them to an 11-2
blocking victory on the night.
