OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior Kelly Goc had 17 kills and hit .441, but it wasn't enough as the Creighton volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision to Missouri State on Saturday night in Omaha. Scores of the match were 30-22, 31-29, 31-29.
With the win, Missouri State (19-3) kept pace with Wichita State atop the MVC standings with an 8-1 league record. Creighton (13-7) dropped one game back and is in third place at 7-2 in league play.
Goc led Creighton's offensive attack with 17 kills, while Bianca Rivera led the defense with 18 digs. Creighton finished with 49 kills, one ace, 57 digs and six blocks and hit .176.
Missouri State was led by 23 kills from Sara Staubach, while Katelyn Panzau returned from an ankle injury to record 50 assists and 11 digs. MSU ended with 59 kills, three aces, 72 digs and 10 blocks while hitting .255.
MSU never trailed in the first game of its 30-22 win. With the score tied at 9-9, the Bers scored seven of the next eight points to gain control. Staubach's ninth kill of game one ended the first set.
Missouri State would hold off a furious Creighton comeback late in the second game. The Bears seemed in control with a 28-21 lead before the Jays came back. Back-to-back attack errors, followed by a Korie Lebeda ace closed the gap to 28-24 and caused MSU coach Melissa Stokes to use her second timeout. After CU outside hitter Amanda Cvjedlik's kill brought the Jays within 28-26, her subsequent error gave the Bears three game point opportunities. This time a kill from CU's Lauren Bloemke and consecutive attack errors by the visitors tied the score at 29. Missouri State quickly snuffed out Creighton's rally with a kill from Jamie Adams, followed by a double-block of Bloemke by Panzau and Shayla Patrick for the 31-29 win and a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Creighton led the majority of the third game before MSU took its first lead at 26-25 on a Staubach kill. The Bears owned a 29-27 lead before CU once again fought back to force deuce play, getting a kill from Goc and Abby Baumann to knot the score at 29-all. However, a Bears block followed by an Adams kill ended the match, once again 31-29 in favor of MSU.
