Last Week - Creighton split a pair of Missouri Valley Conference contests on the road, winning at Drake, 2-1, before falling to Illinois State by the same 2-1 score. The win at Drake marked the Bluejays' first-ever regular season win over the Bulldogs in Des Moines and broke Drake's 18-match unbeaten streak in MVC play dating back to 2003. Junior Marcy Gans scored a goal in each match for the Jays, and redshirt freshman Tara Bailey scored the game-winning goal in the victory over Drake. Goalkeeper Kristen Casey had 12 saves in the two matches, including a career-high nine stops in the loss to Illinois State.
Scouting Creighton (6-6-1, 1-1-1 MVC) - The Bluejays ended a three-match scoreless streak by scoring three goals in their two matches last week. Marcy Gans, who scored two of the three goals last week, is Creighton's most dangerous player offensively and leads the team in every offensive category. She tops the MVC with 49 shots and three game-winning goals and is tied for second with six goals. Freshman Emily Orbell is second on the team with seven points, on three goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Kristen Casey is second in the Valley with four shutouts and fourth with 54 saves.
Scouting Indiana State (5-9-0, 0-2-0 MVC) - The Sycamores had MVC preseason favorite Evansville on its heels, but the Purple Aces scored two goals in the final six minutes to defeat INSU 2-1 last Friday. Indiana State fell to Illinois State, 2-0, on Oct. 5 for their other MVC loss. The Sycamores have lost four of their past five matches entering Friday's contest in Omaha and have allowed a league-high 30 goals this season.
Freshman Caitlin Noble leads the Sycamores in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists, including the goal in INSU's loss to Evansville. Senior Sarah Whiteley leads the team with five goals. Goalkeeper Rachel Rudzis has recorded an MVC-best 76 saves.
Scouting Western Illinois (11-1-1) - The Westerwinds will be playing their second match in as many days on Sunday, as WIU has a road contest at North Dakota State on Saturday. WIU enters its match with NDSU on a 10-match unbeaten streak and the Westerwinds have already tied a school record with 11 victories so far this season. WIU's lone loss came at Evansville on Sept. 7, but since then the Westerwinds have victories over MVC members Illinois State and Missouri State. WIU's most impressive victory of the season came Sunday (Oct. 14) on the road at Iowa State, as they defeated the Cyclones 2-0.
Western Illinois has posted seven shutouts this fall to tie a school record. Goalkeeper Megan Tyk has allowed only four goals in 12 games, and she posted 11 of her 40 saves this season in the Westerwinds' victory over Iowa State. Offensively, WIU has scored 26 goals, led by Katelyn Wisner's six scores. Four other players have tallied at least 10 points for WIU, including Robyn Ruypers who has a team-high five assists.
Series History - Creighton has never lost to Indiana State and holds an impressive 9-0-0 edge in the all-time series. The Bluejays beat the Sycamores 3-1 last season in Terre Haute and 2-1 in overtime the last time the teams played at Morrison Stadium in 2005.
Creighton also is unbeaten against Western Illinois, dominating the series with a 8-0-1 record against the Westerwinds. The last meeting between the teams ended in a 1-1 draw on Aug. 31, 2005, in Macomb, Ill. The Jays beat WIU, 4-0, in Omaha on Sept. 10, 2004.
Bluejay Boss - Head coach Bruce Erickson is in his ninth season as the Creighton women's soccer coach and has an 87-74-17 (.537) record with the Jays. Erickson is the winningest coach in school history and was the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year. He has guided Creighton to MVC Tournament championships in 2002, 2004, and 2005 and three NCAA Tournament appearances in the same years. In 2002, the Jays won both the regular season and tournament championships. Creighton has qualified for the MVC Tournament in eight straight seasons, and has reached the championship match in four of the past five years. Erickson has a 30-17-7 (.620) record in conference matches at Creighton.
KC Masterpiece - Junior goalkeeper Kristen Casey picked up a career-high nine saves in Creighton's 2-1 loss to Illinois State on Sunday, giving her 54 on the season and 131 for her career. Casey is now eight saves away from cracking the top-five on the school's career saves list. In the Jays' last home match on Oct. 5 against Missouri State, Casey tied Morrison Stadium career records with her eighth shutout and 57th save at home in her three seasons at Creighton. The blanking was the 10th overall in her career, moving Casey into a tie for fifth on CU's career shutout charts.
Tremendous Turn-Out - With an average turn-out of 803 fans per game during the first six home contests this season, Creighton leads the MVC in attendance and is believed to be in the top-30 nationally. The 2007 season has featured two of the eight largest attendance totals in school history. The Sept. 21 match against Iowa drew a school-record 1,547 fans and the season opener against Northern Colorado on Aug. 31 was attended by 1,077 patrons. The 803 average is over 550 more than the average of the next closest school in the MVC.
Morrison Magic - Creighton is 27-10-6 (.698) at Morrison Stadium since it opened in 2003, including a 9-1-3 (.808) record in MVC play. The Jays are 3-2-1 so far at Morrison this season, including a 0-0 draw with Missouri State (Oct. 5) in Creighton's last home match.
MVC Leaders - As a team, Creighton leads the MVC in corner kicks, with 66, and is second in shots attempted, with 172. Individually, junior Marcy Gans leads the Valley with 49 shots and three game-winning goals. She is also tied for second with six goals and is third with 14 points. Gans, along with seniors Sam Russell and Katy Peetz and juniors Nicole DeLue and Lindsay Vaught each have two assists to tie for eighth in the MVC. Goalkeeper Kristen Casey is tied for second in the league with four shutouts and is fourth with 54 saves.
Two-Goal Advantage - Creighton's 3-2 loss to North Dakota State on Sept. 14 marked only the ninth time in school history the Jays have lost when scoring two or more goals in a match. With its 2-1 win over Drake on Thursday, Creighton is now 161-9-7 all-time when reaching the two-goal mark in a match.
Record Watch - Senior Sam Russell remains two assists away from cracking the top-five in career assists at Creighton, and she is also two home assists shy of tying the Morrison Stadium career mark. Goalkeeper Kristen Casey will set Morrison Stadium career records with her next save and next shutout at home and she is two victories from tying the stadium's career wins mark. Casey is also one shutout and nine saves away from sole possession of fifth on CU's career charts in those respective categories.
Marcy's Playground - Junior forward Marcy Gans is the team's most potent offensive threat, leading all current players with 16 career goals and 42 career points after scoring a goal in both of Creighton's games last week. She leads the team this season with six goals, 14 points, 49 shots, and 18 shots on goal. Gans has scored the game-winning goal in three of Creighton's six victories and has assisted on another. She holds Morrison Stadium career records for goals (8), points (23), shots (87), and shots on goal (38). Gans is a two-time MVC All-Tournament team pick and was the tourney's MVP as a freshman. She has also been named an All-MVC honorable mention twice in her career.
More on Marcy - Gans has scored a point in every Creighton win this season, including a goal in five of the six wins. Her goal in the Bluejays' 2-1 loss to Illinois State on Sunday marked the first time CU had not won this season when she scores a point... She registered more game-winning goals (3) in the first six matches of the 2007 season than she had in her first two seasons combined (2)... The 10 points Gans scored in the first eight contests this season matched Toch Ihemelu?s team-leading point total from last season... Gans accounts for over 25 percent of the team's total output in points, goals, and shots.
Reliable Russell - Senior defender Sam Russell has become a rare four-year starter for the Bluejays this fall. The Stilwell, Kan., native has made 69 career starts, more than any other player on the Creighton roster. Russell is currently tied for the team lead with two assists, and also had the game-winning goal in the Jays' 3-0 win over South Dakota on Sept. 11. Her 16 career assists are two shy of fifth place on the school's career charts. Twelve of Russell's 16 assists have come at Morrison Stadium, which is two away from the stadium's career mark of 14 set by Kristine Willrett.
All Over the Field - Junior Nicole DeLue has been a versatile weapon for the Jays with the ability to play all three positions on the field. The Littleton, Colo., native has started all 13 contests, split between the midfield and backline, and she also has the capability to play up front. She picked up the game-winning assist on Marcy Gans' goal in the Jays' 2-1 win over Northern Colorado in the season opener and added another assist in a win over South Dakota on Sept. 11. Her two assists are tied for the team lead.
Seeing Double - Senior twins Ally and Katy Peetz have combined to start 71 matches in their careers and the duo has appeared in a total of 125. Younger sister, Anne Peetz, is a sophomore on the team and has appeared in 20 matches in her career. Anne also has a twin, Carly, who plays soccer at the University of Nebraska. Katy and Anne both had assists in the Jays' win over South Dakota on Sept. 11. Katy has not played since the South Dakota match, however, as she has been bothered by an ankle injury.
Seniority Rules - The 2007 Creighton squad features six seniors, all of whom have contributed significantly already this season. The six seniors have played in a combined 380 matches and accumulated 220 starts throughout their careers. Tristan Moser-Bleil, Ally Peetz, Katy Peetz, and Sam Russell each have started at least 35 matches at Creighton. Toch Ihemelu led the Jays in scoring last season with 10 points on five goals. Heather Duncan has made 25 career starts, including all 13 matches this season, and was an All-MVC honorable mention last season. Ihemelu and Russell each have a goal in 2007, while Russell and Katy Peetz both have two assists to tie for the team lead.
The Newcomers - The Jays have five newcomers in 2007: D Brittni Deeb, M/F Grace Kwon, M Emily Orbell, M/F Claire Zach, and M Mary Zapapas. Zapapas is a sophomore transfer from Middle Tennessee, where she was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year last season after scoring 11 goals and assisting on four. So far this season, the newcomers have combined to play in 44 matches, including 30 starting assignments. Orbell has started all 13 matches and has three goals, Deeb has made nine starts on the backline, Zapapas has six starts, and Kwon has been in the starting lineup twice.
Lineup Flexibility - Exactly half of the players on the Creighton roster are listed at multiple positions, giving head coach Bruce Erickson the ability to mix and match lineups for various situations. This strategy has also been critical for developing team depth at each position in the event of injuries.
Neighbors to the North - Minnesota natives Emily Orbell (White Bear Lake) and Brittni Deeb (Lake Elmo) have played important roles in their freshmen seasons. Orbell, who has started all 13 matches, is second on the team with three goals and seven points. She scored a goal in her first collegiate match against Northern Colorado in the season opener and tallied the game-winning goal against Weber State on Sept. 23. Deeb started on the backline in nine of Creighton's first 11 contests, but an injury has kept her out of the past two matches. Senior Tristan Moser-Bleil (Minneapolis) gives Creighton three contributors from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Moser-Bleil has been a regular in the lineup since arriving as a freshman and has played in more matches (74) than any other player on the Jays' roster. Head coach Bruce Erickson (Brooklyn Park) also originally hails from the state.
International Experience - Three members of the women's soccer program have or will represent their countries on the field. Sophomore Eden Hingwing played with the Canadian National Team last fall at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Championships in Russia. First-year assistant coach Ileana Moschos was a goalkeeper for the Greek Women's National Team from 2002-04 and participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Volunteer assistant coach and former CU player Ivonne Valentin will begin training with the Puerto Rican National Team early this fall.
Exhibition Recap - The Jays finished 1-1-1 during exhibition play this preseason. Creighton fell 2-0 at Iowa State on Aug. 18, before reversing the fortunes with a 2-0 victory at Valparaiso on Aug. 21. Marcy Gans scored a goal and assisted on the other in the win over the Crusaders. Creighton and the University of Mary played to a 0-0 draw Aug. 26 at Morrison Stadium. The Jays out-shot Mary, 26-1, in the match but could not capitalize.
Up Next - Creighton concludes the regular season next week with two final Missouri Valley Conference matchups. The Jays will travel to Indiana to play MVC preseason favorite Evansville on Friday, Oct. 26. The team will return home for Senior Day against Northern Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 28, in the regular season finale.
