TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Creighton volleyball team improved to 6-0 in MVC road matches with a 30-9, 30-14, 30-23 win at Indiana State on Friday night. The Bluejays improved to 15-8 overall and are now 9-3 in league play, while last place Indiana State is 3-17 overall and winless in 12 conference matches.
Creighton dominated the match, never trailing by more than one point at any juncture while sweeping Indiana State for the sixth straight meeting. Creighton is now a perfect 6-0 in MVC road matches and has won its last eight in league action away from the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
"I thought we did a lot of good things tonight to earn points and not
give away points," said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "Last
weekend we made too many unforced errors and we did a better job taking
care of our own side tonight."
In the first game, Creighton used seven different runs of 3-0 or longer to rout the hosts, 30-9. The win was Creighton's largest margin of victory in any game since the inception of the rally scoring era, which dates back to 2001. The Jays hit .419 with 16 kills, collected five blocks, and also served up four aces while holding ISU to -.129 hitting.
Creighton stormed to a 6-0 lead in game two without the benefit of a kill, getting two aces from Lauren Bloeemke and four Sycamore attack errors. Creighton later put together an 8-0 run with Allie Oelke and Maggie Workman serving before consecutive kills from Sarah Schulze gave CU the 30-14 win. Creighton hit .361 in the second game and Indiana State once again had more errors than kills to hit -.026.
With Creighton trailing 6-5 early in game three, Schulze served a 5-0 run that gave the Jays the lead for good. Bloemke had six kills in the final game, part of a night that saw her record 12 kills and hit .556.
Kelly Goc led Creighton with 15 kills and four blocks while hitting .379. Bloemke had 12 kills and hit .556 to go with two aces, while Oelke ended with 11 kills, nine digs and .308 hitting. All 13 Bluejays in uniform saw time, including the first start of 2007 for Carolyn Decker. Creighton hit .340 as a team and finished with 52 kills, nine aces, 50 digs and 7.0 blocks.
Indiana State had just one player with more than three kills, as Jodilynne Stoker finished with five. The Sycamores had 21 kills, three aces, 31 digs and four blocks while hitting -.010.
