WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State clinched at least a share of the MVC regular-season title with a 3-0 victory over visiting Creighton on Saturday night at Koch Arena. Scores of the match were 30-26, 30-20, 30-19.
The setback ended Creighton's 10-match winning streak in MVC road matches, the longest in school history.
Wichita State is 15-1 in league action with two contests to play, while Creighton dropped into fourth place in the league standings with a 13-4 conference record. The Jays sit one-half game behind Missouri State and Northern Iowa, who play each other next Saturday in Cedar Falls to close the regular-season.
Kelly Goc and Allie Oelke each had 10 kills to lead Creighton, while Sarah Schulze had 14 digs in the match to lead CU. Lauren Bloemke added six blocks for the Jays. CU hit .085 and finished with 34 kills, three aces, 46 digs and nine blocks.
Wichita State was paced by 14 kills from Winthrop transfer Emily Stockman, who also made 10 errors and hit just .108. Ten of Stockman's kills came in the opening game. Reigning MVC Player of the Year Sara Lungren had 10 kills and nine digs for the Shockers. WSU finished with 50 kills, six aces, 56 digs and eight blocks while hitting .240.
"They out-passed and ballhandled better than us," said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "Wichita State was in system more than us and beat us in the defensive game. They are a very good team and we'll have to play very good ball to beat them. They attacked us and they played better than us tonight."
Creighton concludes the regular-season next Friday with a 7 pm match against Drake. Bluejay seniors Abby Baumann, Kelly Goc and Katie Mehal will be honored prior to the game.
NOTES: Bianca Rivera's streak of 27 straight matches with 10 or more digs came to an end, as she had just eight digs. Rivera's streak of 27 straight matches of 10 or more digs to open a career is a school record, exceeding the previous mark of three.
