
Gans, Thayer Earn National Soccer Honors

OMAHA, Neb. ? Sophomore Jeff Thayer and junior Marcy Gans of the Creighton men's and women's soccer teams have each been named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week for their play last week. Thayer helped the men wrap up a regular-season Missouri Valley Conference championship, while Gans led the women's charge to the MVC Tournament title.
Thayer, who was also honored as the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, scored the game-winning goal and helped lead a the Bluejay defense in a 3-1 win at Evansville. Thayer's second goal of the year was also his second game-winning score of the season, as he beat the UE keeper in the 63rd minute to help the Bluejays overcome a 1-0 first-half deficit. He also combined with the CU defense to limit the UE offense to just one goal and four shots on goal in the match. UE entered the contest having scored 42 goals in 17 matches this year.
Gans became the first player in league history to be named the MVC Tournament MVP twice and earned all-tournament honors for the third time in her career as she helped the Bluejays to their fourth Valley tournament title. She notched a hat trick in helping CU to a 3-1 win over Evansville in the semifinals and then assisted CU's lone goal in the Jays' 1-1 tie with Illinois State in the championship match. She was one of four Jays to then convert a penalty kick in the shootout, helping CU prevail 4-3 and advance to their fourth NCAA Tournament in the last six years.
Gans set tournament records with five goals and 11 points in CU's three tournament games and broke single-game tournament records in both categories. She leads the team and league with 13 goals and 29 points this season.
The women (11-7-2) will play ninth-ranked USC in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this Friday at 4 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.
The seventh-ranked Creighton men finished the regular-season on a 10-match unbeaten streak and with a 10-1-5 overall mark. CU's 4-0-2 MVC mark was its first unbeaten conference slate since 1996 and helped the Jays capture their second straight regular-season title, eighth overall.
The Creighton men play host to the State Farm MVC Tournament this week at Morrison Stadium, with first round games starting on Wednesday. The Bluejays will play in the first semifinal match Friday night at 5 p.m., against the winner of the Evansville-Missouri State match.
