Some extra-curricular activity in the 26th minute saw SMU's Ben Shuleva earn a red card and ejection, while Allen was handed a yellow card in a melee near midfield. SMU (14-4-2) would play a man down for the final 64 minutes because of an altercation involving Shuleva behind the advancing play.
Andrei Gotsmanov added to Creighton's lead in the 37th minute when he appeared to catch Sandbo out of position. The junior midfielder lofted a shot from 30 yards out over Sandbo's head and into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season off a feed from Jeff Thayer.
A first half with four bookings and 21 fouls came to an end with the Bluejays owning a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard and shots even 6-6.
Despite playing with 10 men, the fifth-ranked and unseeded Mustangs would not back down, creating several scoring chances in the second half. Allen made five of his six saves in the second half as the Mustangs pushed forward aggressively, out-shooting the Jays 11-10 after the break.
