Nov. 29, 2007
“It was a huge start for us. We hadn't played for a while so
we wanted to come out and play well the first 10 or 15 minutes. Tim's goal was
a great one...right corner, couldn't ask for a better start for us to boost our
confidence up and we kept on going from there.”
Creighton junior
Andrei Gotsmanov (on his goal)
“I just saw the keeper was out a little past the six. When
Tony gave me the ball I took a touch and just shot it in that direction. Thank
God it went in...it was about time for me to score.”
Creighton senior Danny
Minutillo (on impact of SMU red card)
“It definitely opened up the wide a lot more. After that we
looked to get it from the middle and switch it wide. I think they were playing
without a right-mid for a while and then they changed up a little bit, but it
definitely opened it up for us.”
“It doesn't mean anything right now. It's two teams playing
90 minutes at each other, going hard. You lose you're done, that's our mindset.
We're just going to come out there and we don't really look at the seeds. We
just want to play another 90 full minutes, get us another victory and keep
moving on.”
Creighton senior Tim
Bohnenkamp (on the crowd)
“The crowd was great today. We really fed off their energy
and it helped us so much.”
“I thought we were intellectually prepared for the match,
all the way up until today. We'd seen a lot of tape. We'd shown the guys more
film than we had anybody. We went and scouted them so we knew a lot about them.
My fear was were we emotionally prepared? (Assistant coach) Jay Mims did a
great job today of putting together tapes of past games against SMU and what it
was like, and I thought that was really a difference with how we started the
game. It got me fired up, it got the players fired up, it got everybody really
ready to go seeing all the former greats in action against SMU and doing well.”
Creighton coach Bob
Warming (on the emotion of the match)
“It was not as physical as some of the other games, but I
thought it was more emotional. When a player gets ejected like that it's
upsetting to the other team but it makes for more emotion and passion in the
game I think because of that.”
“Other than '93, I don't think we've ever had another
opportunity to be at home, I guess all the way through to the Final Four. I
can't think of another chance to have a second game at home other than '93.
That's a long time. I sent the kids a long e-mail last night about that saying
?this could be their time, this could be our time', and we just have to get the
first one done.”
Creighton coach Bob
Warming (on Danny Minutillo's defense)
“Danny Minutillo, the job he did on number eight (SMU's
Bruno Guarda). Number eight for me, is certainly one of the most talented
players I've ever seen in college soccer. And Danny did an incredible job on
that kid tonight...incredible.”
“I think what I saw was two players going hard at each
other. They probably banged knees into each other, and then I think our player
took it personal and pushed him. I think that Seth (Sinovic) went down, and got
an opportunity to get us a red card from that. I don't think the push was that
severe, I think it was more of an opportunity to get a person carded.
“But I also
believe in the integrity of the officiating. And if the official sees it that
way, I don't think it's my place to change his mind.”
“I thought Creighton was very intense today. They came out
hard. They were creating mistakes and coming for hard tackles, and now they had
one less person to cover. The impact I think was the difference in the game. I
think we would have scored at some point in time if we had 11 players on the
field because I think we came close to scoring with 10 players on the field.
But that's one of those things that happens. You try to have your players
understand that everything they do does matter, and you'd hate to have a senior
player do something that's going to cost everyone else 120 percent more energy
and the outcome of the game.”
“The atmosphere, having fans like you do, was fantastic.”
SMU Coach Schellas
Hyndman (on Tim Bohnenkamp's goal)
“That's tough. Tim (Bohnenkamp) did a great job going by our
guy and hitting a shot. That's the type of players that Bob recruits. He tries
to get the skillful, technical players that have speed that can isolate you
one-on-one. We watched quite a bit on videos on Creighton and it didn't
surprise me that he got isolated and hit the shot as well as he did.”
“What I tell the guys tonight is 1) I'm really proud of
them. I thought that they played as intense as any team I would want to play. I
think the second thing is that we lost to a good team. The third and probably
the most important thing is the lessons learned. Even in losing there are
opportunities to learn. One second you do something wrong and it could be
detrimental to the team. But we can also look at two of the losses we shouldn't
have lost and maybe we're not on the road against Creighton if we win those
games. So it's more than just this game.”
“I think more of an interesting thing is when you look at
what has occurred tonight in our bracket...it's unbelievable. We were saying get
by Creighton. UIC can beat Northwestern and then our next game will be at SMU.
I said to the boys that I don't think
