
Baseball Loses Tough One In Texas To Northwestern

NU right-hander Ryan Myers (1-0) earned the win pitching six innings giving up only two runs on six hits, recording five strikeouts. Sophomore Ty Johnston (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Jays pitching 2.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits, striking out two. NU's David Jensen picked up his second save of the season, pitching the final three innings.
After the Bluejays started the bottom of the ninth with a base hit by Chad Ogden, Darin Ruf was hit by a pitch following a Chris Gradoville fly out. Ross Sinclair then drew a walk following a fielder's choice by Andy Masten, setting the stage for junior catcher Brett Mieras to be the hero.

The Jays had loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with one out, but for the second time on the day, were unable to get any runs across. Second baseman Michael Lam struck out swinging before Robbie Knight flew out to right field to end the inning.
CU however, did get the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Knight singled to right field to lead-off the game. After Knight reached second on a balk from Myers, designated hitter Chris Gradoville would drive him in on an RBI single to center. Gradoville would end the day 1-for-5 with a team-leading 2 RBI.

CU reliever Scott Reese made his school record-breaking 98th appearance in the top of the third inning in relief of
NU would add two unearned runs in the top of the sixth off CU reliever Pat Venditte. With two men on, a wild pitch by Venditte allowed Newman to score from third. Dietz would then single to the left side that scored Antonio Mule from third to give NU a 4-1 lead.
Venditte would end the game going 3.2 innings allowing just one hit, recording three strikeouts.
The Bluejays wouldn't quit despite being down three as they added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. Ruf would score on a fielding error by NU shortstop Tommy Finn in the sixth, then Gradoville picked up his second RBI on the day when his ground out to third drove home Knight to make it 4-3.
Knight would finish the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ruf would finish 1-for-3.
The Bluejays will return to action next weekend when they start their spring break with a three-game non-conference series at Arkansas-Little Rock (Mar. 2-4).
