Omaha, Neb. - The Creighton baseball team ended its four-game weekend set with the North Dakota State Bison with a doubleheader 10-6, 9-8 sweep on Sunday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex. The Bluejays broke out the bats for 19 total runs on the day, as they had seven players get multiple hits in earning their fourth-straight win to complete a sweep of the weekend series.
Senior Chad Ogden provided six of the 19 runs, as he went 3-for-7 on the day with six RBI and two runs scored. Two of Ogden's hits would be home runs, as the Goddard, Kan. native went yard once in each game to record his first two career home runs as a Bluejay.
Also getting multiple hits on the day were Robbie Knight (2-for-10), Michael Lam (3-for-8), Chris Gradoville (3-for-9), Darin Ruf (2-for-9), Steve Winkelmann (2-for-3) and Andy Masten (3-for-7).
Picking up wins on the mound were Masten (3-1) and junior Ben Mancuso (2-0), who got the start in game one giving up just two hits and striking out four in four innings of duty.
In game one, the Jays jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after three, but saw that lead erased after giving up a single run in the top half of the fifth and five in the seventh. With the score 8-6, the Bluejays would recover in the bottom of the seventh to put up two insurance runs in a 10-6 victory.
CU got the scoring started on the day in bottom of the second inning, as they put up a six spot on NDSU starter Seth Foley. After Ruf singled to begin the inning and stole second, right fielder Andrew Small brought him in on a triple to left Center to give the Jays a 1-0 lead. Then after Small scored on a wild pitch, a Masten single and a ground out by Brett Mieras, Ogden came up with one out and pounded the first pitch over the fence in left for a two-run homer to make 4-0. Gradoville would add the last two runs of the inning then with a two-RBI base hit to left center as the Jays collected seven total hits in the inning.
Foley finished his outing going 1.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.
The Bison would come back though adding a single run in the fifth off a solo-home run by Ryan Langlais and then would add five in the top of the seventh off CU reliever Ty Johnston to get right back in the game. Three of those five runs would come via a three-run home run by Shannon Ekermans to left field that brought the score to 8-6.
The Jays would answer the call though in the bottom half of the inning, as they took advantage of two throwing errors to score two more runs.
Junior Pat Venditte wouldn't allow the Bison to answer back then in the eighth, as he pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit and striking out three.
In game two, the Jays once again took an early 7-0 lead after three, but like game one saw that lead evaporate as NDSU put up five runs in the top of the fourth to close to within two runs. After CU added a single run in the bottom of the fifth, the Bison then tied the game at 8-8 as they put up three in the top of the six, but the Jays would once again answer back getting a single run in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 9-8 victory to complete the weekend sweep.
With two outs in the CU sixth, Ruf was able to reach base on an error by Bison third baseman Kenny Beese. That brought up Masten who would hit an RBI double to left center for his second hit of the game, as Ruf came around to score the winning-run from second.
Like in game one, Ogden provided the early spark for the Jays, as with two on in the bottom of the second he started the game's scoring with a two-RBI double to right center. Ogden then put up two more runs in the CU third, as with Winkelmann on first, he once again pounded a first pitch down the left field line for a two-run homer to make it 7-0. Winkelmann also picked up an RBI in the inning with a single to left field after the Jays scored a run on both a wild pitch and passed ball.
CU fresham Casey Schmidt was cruising along in his third start of the season, as he retired the first nine batters he faced without giving up a hit, but he couldn't hold in the fourth.
The Bison answered the Jays in the fourth as they put up four earned runs on Schmidt on three hits, before he was relieved by Scott Reese. Like Ogden, Ekermans would go deep for the second time on the day off Schmidt to begin the frame. Then after Ricky Hefflinger picked up an RBI single four batters later, center fielder Greg Plecki went deep on just the third pitch thrown by Reese for a three-run homer to left center which cut the lead to 7-5.
CU added a single run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bison would tie the game up in the top of the sixth. First baseman Cole Zimmerman began the inning with a solo-home run down the left field line, as following two walks , Reese was relieved by Chris Marchildon. Marchildon struck out the first batter he faced then allowed a single as Masten came in to pitch the final 3.2 innings of the game.
Luke Otto welcomed Masten to the mound starting him off with a two-RBI single to center field which tied the game up at 8-8. Masten redeemed himself though in the bottom of the sixth on his RBI double, as he would go on the finish up the game and collect the win giving up just two hits and striking out three.
With the wins the Bluejays improved to 12-7 on the year and 7-1 at hom, while the Bison fell to 2-9.
CU will return to the field next weekend when they begin Missouri Valley Conference play with a three-game series at Evansville. First pitch for Friday's game against the Purple Aces is set for 6 p.m.
