OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton women's basketball associate head coach Tanya Warren has been named the new head coach at the University of Northern Iowa as announced at a UNI press conference Monday afternoon. Warren, a member of the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame, had served on the Bluejay coaching staff for the past three seasons and this will be her first head coaching job at the collegiate level.
?We are going to miss Tanya and we wish her all the best,? said Creighton head coach Jim Flanery. ?She's a great teacher of the game. She's already a good recruiter and will have good success recruiting to Northern Iowa. It's a place she's familiar with so her transition should be smooth. It is a great opportunity, but we hate to lose her. All the things that she helped put into place here will certainly carry over into the immediate future at Creighton.?
Warren, a Bluejay guard from 1983-88, worked with the Bluejay backcourt during her time at Creighton. She was also in charge of player development, academic oversight and alumni events while she played a major role in recruiting, camps and scouting. The Bluejays advanced to the WNIT during her first season at Creighton and appeared in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship game this past season.
The Des Moines native previously served as an assistant coach on the UNI staff from 1995 through 2001 under Tony DiCecco, her predecessor with the Panthers. DiCecco resigned as the all-time winningest coach in UNI history after 12 years at the helm of the Panthers. UNI also hired DiCecco away from Creighton, where he served as an assistant coach under current Bluejay athletics director Bruce Rasmussen and later under Connie Yori.
Warren was inducted in the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996 and her No. 10 jersey is one of just two retired in school history. She remains the career leader in assists at Creighton with 650, while she also owns the single season record of 228, which ranked 10th in the NCAA in 1987. Also a former assistant at Missouri and Iowa State, she ranks eighth in school history with 1,566 career points.
Flanery will search for a replacement for Warren, who will join the staff of assistant coaches Steve Huber and Jenny Burns and graduate manager Kristi Woodard. The Bluejays appeared in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship game this season and finished the year with a 13-19 record, 8-10 for a sixth place finish in The Valley. CU does not lose any players from last year's team and brings in a talented four-player recruiting class for a much anticipated 2007-08 campaign.
