OMAHA, Neb. -- Two seniors on the 2006-07 Creighton men's basketball team, Nate Funk and Anthony Tolliver, were recently named All-Americans. Both Funk and Tolliver were named to the 21-man CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-America Team, while Tolliver was also named to the 10-person Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-American Second Team.
Creighton was the only school to have multiple players on the Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major All-America Team. Division I coaches and NBA scouts are part of the selection process, but final decision rests with the collegeinsider.com staff.
Funk, a senior guard from Sioux City, Iowa, averaged 17.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He led the team in minutes, scoring, three-pointers made, steals and assists, and also was a first-team all-district selection. Also named Most Outstanding Player of the State Farm MVC Tournament, he finished his career sixth in school history with 1,754 career points.
Tolliver, a senior center from Springfield, Mo., was also named first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference this year. He averaged 13.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game while anchoring the Bluejay defense. Earlier in the spring he was named a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Additionally, Tolliver earned a spot on the Lowe's senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team. Wisconsin's Alando Tucker was named winner of the Senior CLASS Award and headed the first-team, which also included Acie Law IV (Texas A&M), Adam Haluska (Iowa), Curtis Sumpter (Villanova) and Nick Fazekas (Nevada). The second team consisted of Aaron Gray (Pittsburgh), Jared Dudley (Boston College), Jarrius Jackson (Texas Tech), J.R. Reynolds (Virginia) and Tolliver.
Both Funk and Tolliver are currently in Portsmouth, Va., at the 55th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which runs April 4-7. Tolliver had 14 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists in 35 minutes during his first action last night. Funk's team opens play this evening.
Creighton finished the 2006-07 team with a 22-11 record and seventh NCAA Tournament bid in the last nine years. CU is one of just nine teams with nine straight 20-win seasons and one of 12 schools with 12 straight postseason appearances.
