MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Kelly Goc and Minnesota native Allie Oelke each had 13 kills to lead the Bluejays, but it was not enough as the 13th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers topped the Creighton volleyball team 3-1 Saturday night at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis. Scores in favor of the hosts were 30-22, 29-31, 30-23, 30-13. The loss drops Creighton to 7-5 on the season, while Minnesota moved to 7-3 and claimed the tournament title.
After dropping game one 30-22, the Bluejays bounced back to take game two from the Gophers. Minnesota had game point in game two, up 29-28, but Goc and Oelke combined to block Brook Dieter's attack and tie the game. From there, back-to-back attack errors by Dieter gave the Bluejays a 31-29 game two triumph.
The Bluejays never led in game three and the nationally-ranked foes cruised to a 30-13 win in game four.
Goc led the Bluejays, hitting .429 in the match with her 13 kills. Oelke, the freshman playing in her home state, also recorded 13 kills against the Gophers. Bianca Rivera led the team with 26 digs.
Minnesota was paced by 20 kills each from Dieter and Papillion native Kyla Roehrig. Three players had 20 digs or more, keyed by 30 from Christine Tan.
The match was CU's final non-conference contest of the season as the Bluejays will step back into Missouri Valley Conference play at Northern Iowa on Friday.
