
McAvoy and Cadwallader Sisters Win On Day One of MVC Individual Tennis Championships

OMAHA, Neb. -- Sophomore James McAvoy and the doubles pair of Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader were victorious on day one of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Men's and Women's Championships Friday at Koch Family Outdoor Tennis Center.
McAvoy won his opening No. 4 singles match over Michel Macara of Bradley by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. McAvoy advances to face Breno Salvany of Southern Illinois in Saturday's Flight 4 semifinals.
Freshmen twin sisters Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader won their Flight 2 doubles match over Bradley's Kim Braun and Jessica Buterbaugh, 8-4. The pair will now face Julia Zubkova and Katie O'Riley of Illinois State on Saturday in the semifinals.
In other action on Friday, Creighton junior Jose Guerra lost to Felipe Villasenor of Southern Illinois, 6-3, 6-1, in Flight 1 singles. In the No. 2 position, junior Nikita Dudar fell to Mpilo Migogo of Illinois State, 6-4, 6-4. Senior Joe Eckert, the No. 3 player for the Bluejays, was beaten by Wichita State's Kevin Gardner by scores of 7-5, 6-0.
On the women's side, sophomore Lindsey Erickson lost to Wichita State's Torrie Browning in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Lauren Mastro fell in her Flight 2 opener to Sampada Kanade of Northern Iowa, 6-3, 6-3. In No. 3 singles, Sarah Cadwallader was defeated by Taynara Moraes of Northern Iowa by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Leesa Cadwallader lost in her Flight 4 singles opener to Carolyne Parent of Illinois State, 6-1, 6-0. In No. 5 singles, freshman Rachelle Shoji was beaten by Illinois State's O'Riley by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
In men's doubles action, Creighton's No. 1 team of Dudar and Eckert fell in a close match to Luka Marinkovic and Daniel Tobar of Illinois State, 9-7. The No. 2 doubles team of Guerra and Brian Ward lost to Drake's Guilherme Marsiglia and Ivan Mendoza, 8-0.
Creighton's No. 1 women's double team of Erickson and Mastro were edged by Evansville's Lisa Kawamoto and Sara Wilhoite, 8-3.
Other matches on Saturday will feature Creighton's Ward against Halvar Dil of Drake in the Flight 5 semifinals. Elson will meet Illinois State's Michael Hobson in No. 6 singles. In No. 7 singles, senior Ross Allen will take on Drake's Scott Buchowski and freshman Bryan Lube will face Konrad Kamazelich of Drake.
Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved indoors to Hanscom Tennis Courts at 3220 Ed Creighton Ave.
